The Minor-Changed 5 Series Finally Launches in Japan

Minor Model Change in Europe in MayThe BMW 5 Series, which underwent a minor model change in Europe in May, has finally been released in Japan. It features a sportier exterior, enhanced safety equipment, and as standard, the driver assistance systems that BMW calls "Driving Assist" with pedestrian detection, along with "BMW SOS Call" and "BMW Teleservices."

Furthermore, the "5 Series Gran Turismo" sees an increase of 60 liters in luggage capacity and the addition of the "528i Gran Turismo" equipped with a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. For all body types, the "550i" now features a newly adopted 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with an output increased to 450ps (from the previous 407ps). The top model, the "M5"M5" now offers an optional "Competition Package" with dedicated suspension, steering, and differential tuning, and an increased engine output of 575ps.

In the new 5 Series, both the Sedan and Touring models adopt a more three-dimensional kidney grille design. The taillights feature LED light bars in BMW's traditional L-shape motif, giving them a new aesthetic.

The 5 Series Gran Turismo also features a modified front bumper air intake shape to emphasize its presence. The rear adopts new taillight designs and adds a chrome accent bar connecting the left and right reflectors at the bottom of the bumper. Additionally, "535i" and above models, including the "550i," "ActiveHybrid 5," and "M5," now come standard with adaptive LED headlights.

Following the earlier introduction of the "3 Series"3 Series," the 5 Series lineup includes "Modern," "Luxury," and "M Sport" for all models except the "M5." The "Modern" and "Luxury" trims feature various equipment tailored to their respective concepts for both exterior and interior. Emblems indicating each grade are affixed to the front fenders.

The "M Sport" package incorporates dedicated equipment developed by "BMW M," such as the "M Aerodynamics Package" and "M Sport Suspension," offering a sporty driving experience and appearance as its name suggests.

Updated Connectivity and Safety Features

The highlight is the standard inclusion of the latest safety devices.
BMWrefers to these collectively as driver assistance systems.

All models come standard with "Driving Assist," which uses a camera to provide three functions: "Forward Collision Warning" to alert the driver of potential collisions with vehicles or pedestrians, "Collision Warning with Active Braking" to automatically apply brakes to avoid or mitigate collisions, and "Lane Departure Warning" to alert the driver of lane departure.

Models from the "535i" (including xDrive and Touring) upwards are equipped with the more advanced "Driving Assist Plus" as standard. This includes "Collision Warning with Active Braking" using millimetre-wave radar sensors and "Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function" for automatic speed control while maintaining distance to the vehicle ahead.

Additionally, standard features include "Lane Change Warning," which alerts the driver to vehicles in the blind spot or approaching from behind, and "Active Protection," which combines multiple safety functions such as tightening seatbelt slack in the event of a serious accident detected by airbag deployment to enhance occupant restraint.

The vehicle also includes "BMW SOS Call," which automatically connects to an SOS call center in the event of a serious accident where airbags deploy, and "BMW Teleservices," which uses the car's communication functions to automatically notify the designated BMW dealer of vehicle issues or maintenance needs.

For comfort features, the "528i," "535i," and "550i" models come standard with a "Multi-Display Instrument Panel" where the meter panel display changes to "ECO PRO," "COMFORT," or "SPORT" modes depending on the driving mode. The "iDrive Controller" has also been improved with a touchpad for character input and map zooming, enhancing usability.
