European deliveries to start November 16
Photos already releasedThe European launch of the third-generation "BMW X5 (F15)," produced in South Carolina, USA, has been set for November 16, 2013. At launch, as previously reported, the lineup will include three models, including the "M Performance model," the "BMW X5 M50d."
To reiterate, the characteristic, SUV-like, massive body designprevious model (E70)has been further evolved from the previous model (E70), achieving a refined form with excellent aerodynamic properties. The appearance, with its short front overhang and wheels pushed to the four corners, conveys a tough, SUV-like impression that can handle any road, a common trait across successive X5 generations, including the first-generation X5 (E53).
The distinctive front face, with its integrated headlights connecting to the kidney grille, 3 Seriesand5 Seriessuggests a design connection with the latest models. Body dimensions are 4,886 mm in length, 1,938 mm in width, and 1,762 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,933 mm, figures nearly identical to the current model.
The horizontal dashboard design carries over from the current model, with this motif extending to the door trims. The familiar iDrive system, used to control navigation and various settings, is now paired with an independent 10.25-inch touch-sensitive monitor on the dashboard. This layout is a defining characteristic of the third-generation interior.
The rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split-folding backrest for versatile arrangements. A third-row seat is also available as an option. The luggage compartment capacity can be expanded from 650 liters to a maximum of 1,870 liters. The tailgate is equipped as standard with automatic tailgate operation, which can be controlled remotely or via a switch on the driver's seat.
The enhanced safety equipment is another hallmark of the third generation. It includes Night Vision with pedestrian and animal detection and Dynamic Light Spot, Lane Change Warning, Parking Assistant with front and rear guidance and lateral guide function, Surround View with 360-degree display, Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and full stop capability, Driving Assistant with collision warning/pedestrian warning functions including braking, and Driving Assistant Plus with Traffic Jam Assistant for active control of vehicle speed and steering angle in heavy traffic. The list of implemented devices is extensive.
Also available is the full-color BMW Head-Up Display, along with concierge services, remote services, Intelligent Emergency Call, Real-Time Traffic Information, and internet access. While official confirmation for Japanese language support is pending, features like voice input for emails, SMS, and memos for easy Facebook and Twitter use within the car, and online entertainment are also provided. Similar to the 5 Series, an optional Bang & Olufsen surround audio system is available.

Focus on the "M Performance Model"
At the November launch, the lineup will consist of three variations: the top-tier "X5 xDrive50i" equipped with a new-generation V8 gasoline engine (330 kW/450 hp), the "X5 xDrive30d" with a straight-six diesel engine (190 kW/258 hp), and the "M Performance model" powered by a triple-turbocharged straight-six diesel engine (280 kW/381 hp) developed by M.BMWThe "X5 M50d." Later, the "X5 xDrive40d," "X5 xDrive35i," and "X5 xDrive25d" will be added, along with the "X5 sDrive25d" (rear-wheel drive), boasting CO2 emissions of 149 g/km.
Particularly noteworthy is the "M Performance model," the "BMW X5 M50d." Its 3.0-liter common-rail direct-injection straight-six engine is equipped with three turbochargers, producing a maximum power of 280 kW (381 hp) and an immense torque of up to 740 Nm (75.4 kgm). The transmission is an 8-speed automatic. While it boasts M-worthy performance with a top speed of 250 km/h (limited) and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.3 seconds, it also achieves impressive fuel economy of 6.7 L/100 km (14.9 km/L) and CO2 emissions of 177 g/km. It complies with EU6 standards, ensuring environmental performance is not compromised.
The chassis of the "X5 M50d" comes standard with Adaptive M Suspension, including Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension, and electric power steering, along with 19-inch double-spoke M light-alloy wheels. For those seeking an even sportier ride, an optional Dynamic Adaptive Suspension package is available, which suppresses pitching and rolling for an enhanced sporty driving experience.
Rumors suggest the third-generation X5 will be delivered in Japan starting this December. It is expected to make its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in November.
