Detects Obstacles, Pedestrians, and Bicycles

In recent years, the number of cyclists enjoying cycling for sports, leisure, and commuting has been increasing. However, accidents caused by violations of etiquette, and collisions with automobiles sharing the same road, are becoming more dangerous. According to a survey on accidents between automobiles and bicycles by the Traffic Accident Analysis Center, the fatality rate in "rear-end collisions" is about 10 times higher than in intersection collisions. Furthermore, "driver inattention" accounts for about 80% of the causes of accidents involving four-wheeled drivers, making up the vast majority.

As part of its "Vision 2020" initiative to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries in Volvo cars by 2020, Volvo has newly developed and adopted the "Cyclist Detection Function" to reduce accidents involving bicycles.

This system, called the "Cyclist Detection Function," operates between 4 km/h and 80 km/h. It detects bicycles traveling in the same direction as the vehicle ahead and, if a bicycle suddenly changes lanes and cuts in front of the vehicle, it automatically applies sudden braking of up to 0.8G to 1.0G with audible and visual warnings to prevent accidents.

If the vehicle speed is 50 km/h or less and the relative speed with the bicycle is less than 15 km/h, it is possible to avoid a collision. Even if the vehicle speed is 50 km/h or more, or the relative speed with the bicycle is 15 km/h or more, it can mitigate the damage of a collision.

However, there are conditions for the bicycles that this "Cyclist Detection Function" can detect. It is announced that it is for adult bicycles equipped with a rear reflector, or reflective plate, at a height of 70 cm or more from the ground.

This "Cyclist Detection Function" equipped collision avoidance and mitigation full auto brake system cannot be installed as a standalone unit. It is included in the "Safety Package," a safety system option priced at 200,000 yen, along with features such as the full-speed range adaptive cruise control.

2014 Models of the 60 Series Also Announced

Along with the announcement of the "Cyclist Detection Function," Volvo also announced the 2014 models of theS60andV60, and theXC60.

The exterior design features a wider front grille, eliminating the "DNA light" next to the grille found in previous models, and adopting a horizontal design. Furthermore, changes extend to the details, such as the addition of LED lights at the lower part of the front bumper and a new bonnet shape incorporating press lines that emphasize the V-shape.

Looking at the interior, the meter panel is now a liquid crystal meter panel, similar to theV40, improving visibility. The design of the shift knob has been changed, and a steering wheel heater has been added. Additionally, sports seats are available as an option for vehicles equipped with the T4 Leather Package and for the T6 AWD.

As mentioned earlier, the "Advanced Safety" features have been enhanced in the 2014 models. The upper limit of the operating range for the automatic emergency braking system, "City Safety," has also been improved from the previous 30 km/h to 50 km/h.

Furthermore, for vehicles equipped with the Safety Package and Active Bending Dual Xenon Headlights, "Full Active High Beam" has been adopted. This system detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of vehicles ahead using camera sensors, and adjusts the high beams to prevent dazzling other drivers.
