A Milestone for Jaguar as a Sports Car Brand

Jaguar positions the F-Type as its most significant milestone to date, a car that signals the future of the Jaguar brand. It has now officially launched in Japan.

The very first car to bear the F-Type name, intended as the successor to Jaguar's iconic E-Type sports car, was unveiled in 2001 by Jaguar, then under Ford's ownership. This iteration was a mid-engined sports car.

However, thisF-Type Conceptgarnered significant attention but subsequently disappeared, with no further updates on the project. The F-Type re-emerged in 2011 as the concept model C-X16, finally arriving as the production F-Type in 2012.

A Pure Sports Car

As Jaguar's designer and Design Director for the F-Type,Ian Callum states, the F-Type is a sports car. Jaguar's existing high-performance coupe,XKis fundamentally a GT car and occupies a different position in the lineup.

The engine is housed in the front-mid position, with the driver seated just ahead of the rear wheels. It features a soft top, two seats, and no fixed roof. This marks Jaguar's return to two-seater sports cars after a 50-year hiatus.

The body is constructed from all-aluminium, which Jaguar claims is its most advanced, robust, and lightweight yet. It achieves an ideal front-rear weight distribution, maximizing the benefits of its rear-wheel-drive layout.

Its design embodies proportions and a profile purely dedicated to its purpose as a sports car. This design excellence has already earned it significant acclaim, including the 2013 World Car Design of the Year award.

Starting with Two Models in Japan

The Japanese market launch includes two models: the F-TYPE, equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine producing 340ps, and the F-TYPE V8 S, featuring a 495ps V8 supercharged engine. The F-TYPE S, which would have offered a higher-output V6, will not be initially available in Japan.

It is available only with right-hand drive, and the transmission is an 8-speed automatic from ZF.
