State-of-the-Art Engines for Diesel, Hybrid, and Gasoline Models
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the "E 250" and "E 250 Avantgarde" is a testament to cutting-edge technology, combining stratified lean-burn combustion, turbocharging, and an exhaust gas recirculation system.
Naturally, it features ECO start/stop functionality. It achieves a maximum output of 155 kW (211 hp) and a peak torque of 350 Nm, representing an increase of 5 kW (7 hp) and 40 Nm respectively over the previous model, while improving fuel economy by approximately 23% to 15.5 km/l in the JC08 mode.
Consequently, it meets the "75% reduction level of 2009 exhaust gas standards (☆☆☆☆)" and the "2027 fuel economy standards +20%," qualifying for new eco-car tax reductions (exemption from weight tax and acquisition tax) and preferential treatment under the Green Vehicle Tax System (50% reduction in the following year's automobile tax).
The 3.0-liter V6 engine in the diesel model, the "E 350 BlueTEC Avantgarde," produces a maximum output of 185 kW (252 hp) and a peak torque of 620 Nm, an increase of +30 kW (+41 hp) and +80 Nm over the previous model. While enhancing performance, it also improves environmental efficiency through the addition of ECO start/stop functionality and optimized engine management. Although official specifications for Japan have not yet been released, the European figures are 5.7 L/100 km (approximately 17.5 km/l).
First in the E-Class in JapanThe hybrid model, the "E 400 HYBRID Avantgarde," utilizes the second generation of Mercedes-Benz's hybrid system, combining a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an electric motor to produce a maximum output of 225 kW (306 hp) and a peak torque of 370 Nm. It is capable of EV driving up to 35 km/h and achieves a fuel economy of 15.2 km/l (JC08 mode).
It meets the "75% reduction level of 2005 exhaust gas standards (☆☆☆☆)" and the "2027 fuel economy standards +20%," qualifying for new eco-car tax reductions (exemption from weight tax and acquisition tax) and preferential treatment under the Green Vehicle Tax System (50% reduction in the following year's automobile tax).
Enhanced Safety Features
Another key feature of the new E-Class is its enhanced safety, approaching the level of the new "S-Class".
By adding a stereo multi-purpose camera (SMPC) and
multi-mode millimeter-wave radar (rear) to the existing short- and long-range millimeter-wave radars, the functions of the Radar Safety Package have been expanded.
Specifically, the "DISTRONIC PLUS" adaptive cruise control now includes a function that assists steering operations while maintaining distance on curves. Additionally, the BAS (Brake Assist System) PLUS, which supports collision avoidance, now incorporates a function that detects pedestrians or vehicles crossing in front and issues a warning via display and sound.
Furthermore, a function that automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not respond to this warning, a system that warns following vehicles by flashing the rear combination lamps in case of a risk of rear-end collision, and a function that reduces secondary damage by locking the tires in the event of a collision have been added.
In addition, "Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS," which controls high beams to avoid dazzling oncoming or preceding vehicles, and "Active Parking Assist," which automatically detects suitable parking spaces for parallel and perpendicular parking and controls steering and braking, are standard equipment. The "360° camera system," which provides an overhead view of the surroundings, is available as an option.

Test drives of this E-Class will also be available at Mercedes-Benz Connection in Roppongi, Tokyo, and Grand Front Osaka in Osaka. Mercedes-Benz Japan is confident that the "dramatic" changes to the E-Class will attract both existing and new fans, and urges customers to see and experience it for themselves.
