A Core Model in the SUV Lineup

Currently, Mercedes-Benz's SUV lineup in Japan includes theGLA,GLC,GLE,GLS, and the rugged off-roaderG-Class. Looking back to 2013, SUVs accounted for only about 5% of Mercedes-Benz sales in Japan, but last year that share grew to nearly 20%, demonstrating their increasing popularity. The GLE sits at the heart of this lineup.

The GLE first debuted in Japan in 1998 under the name "M-Class."M-Class It garnered attention at the time as the first SUV sold by a premium brand not solely focused on SUVs. It has since been sold for approximately 20 years, with its name changed to GLE in2015.

Arriving as a 3-Row, 7-Seater

The most significant change in this model update is its transformation into a 3-row, 7-seater configuration. Compared to the previous generation, the length has increased by 105mm and the width by 12mm. The wheelbase has also been extended by 80mm, resulting in substantial improvements in comfort and cargo space. Consequently, this marks the first time a 3-row seating option has been offered for the GLE.

According to Manuel Terroanes, Manager of Product Planning II, Sales Planning Department at Mercedes-Benz Japan, the demand for a 7-seater configuration was strong not only in the Japanese market but globally, leading to this new option. While the German domestic market offers both 2-row, 5-seater and 3-row, 7-seater versions, only the 3-row, 7-seater will be available in Japan.

Three Engine Options Available

The Japanese market offers three main powertrain options. The base model, the "GLE 300 d 4MATIC," is equipped with the 2-liter, 4-cylinder in-line clean diesel engine, the "OM654." It produces a maximum output of 245 hp and a peak torque of 500 Nm. Developed with a focus on exhaust purification, including a shortened exhaust gas purification path and an sDPF (Diesel Particulate Filter with SCR Coating), this engine complies with the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) regulations implemented in Europe.

The "GLE 400 d 4MATIC Sport" features the 3-liter, 6-cylinder in-line clean diesel engine, the "OM656," which boasts the highest output among Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, delivering 330 hp and 700 Nm of torque. It utilizes a two-stage turbocharger system, with a variable turbine geometry further enhancing the smaller turbine.S 400 dThis engine, also adopted in the "S 400 d" introduced to Japan last year, is said to enable powerful acceleration across the entire rev range, from low to high RPMs. While pursuing efficiency and environmental performance, it also offers low vibration and high quietness.

Finally, there is the "GLE 450 4MATIC Sport." This model combines a compact 3-liter, 6-cylinder in-line gasoline engine, the "M256," with new technologies such as an ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) and a 48V electrical system, achieving simultaneous improvements in efficiency, comfort, and performance. The engine alone produces 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Additionally, an electric motor, the ISG, positioned between the engine and transmission, generates 16 kW and 250 Nm of torque. This ISG and the 48V electrical system charge a lithium-ion battery with approximately 1 kWh capacity through regenerative braking, similar to conventional hybrid vehicles.

When the engine is at low RPMs, this stored energy is used to provide power assistance, resulting in high efficiency and strong acceleration. The starter uses a higher-output electric motor than before, suppressing vibrations during engine startup and improving the comfort of restarts during engine start and stop.

All new GLE models come equipped with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The 300 d features a 4MATIC system with a fixed torque distribution of 50:50 front to rear. The 400 d and 450 are equipped with a newly developed 4MATIC system that allows for continuous variable torque distribution from 100:0 to 0:100 front to rear.

Distinctive C-Pillar Design Remains

The exterior design adheres to Mercedes-Benz's core design philosophy of "Sensual Purity," minimizing character lines and edges to express sensuality through surfaces. In the side view, the thick and stable C-pillar, a feature inherited from the first-generation M-Class, along with the distinctive rear quarter glass area, signifies its lineage as a successor to the M-Class and GLE-Class.

The front features a large octagonal radiator grille, asserting its presence. The standard model is equipped with a chrome-finished underguard and a distinctive louver design within the radiator grille, emphasizing its SUV character. In contrast, the AMG Line models feature a diamond grille and a sporty design for the lower bumper.

This Interior Concept Will Define Future SUVs

"The interior creates a futuristic image with the latest components such as the cockpit display, new steering wheel design, and ambient lighting, along with high-quality interior materials," explains Terroanes. "In addition, bold elements are incorporated to emphasize the SUV character." He further indicated that "this concept is planned to be applied to future SUV models," suggesting that the GLE is the first of these.

The wide center console offers ample space for cup holders and storage, reflecting the spaciousness of a full-size SUV. It also features large grab handles on both sides, characteristic of SUVs, blending ruggedness with a flowing, luxurious design.

The functionally arranged switches provide tactile and auditory feedback upon operation, eliminating the need for the driver to visually confirm if a switch has been activated.

Looking at the center cluster, four rectangular air vents are arranged horizontally. "This design motif is inspired by the louvers found in the radiator grille of the standard model, embodying the essence of Mercedes-Benz SUVs," says Terroanes.

The cockpit display features two high-definition 12.3-inch wide displays, common in Mercedes-Benz's latest mid-size and larger models, seamlessly integrated under a single glass cover. "This creates an advanced design that appears to float in the air," he explained.

Following the "A-Class" announced last year,A-Classthe GLE also incorporates the AI-powered infotainment voice control interface, MBUX, activated by saying "Hey Mercedes."

Delivery Times Vary by Grade

Regarding the delivery schedule for each model, Kintaro Ueno, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Japan, provided the following explanation.

"Deliveries for the GLE 300 d 4MATIC, equipped with the 4-cylinder clean diesel engine, will begin around November. The 6-cylinder in-line clean diesel 400 d 4MATIC will start deliveries around August. The GLE 450 4MATIC, combining a 6-cylinder in-line gasoline engine with ISG, will commence deliveries immediately upon announcement. Prices are listed with both 8% and 10% tax rates (only the 10% rate applies to the 300 d, as deliveries start after the tax increase)."

Special Website Launched to Further Promote Mercedes-Benz SUVs

Regarding the marketing activities for the GLE, President Ueno announced the launch of a special website for SUVs (http://mercedes-suv.jp/) coinciding with the new GLE's unveiling.

The website's concept is to rediscover the charms of various regions in Japan through Mercedes-Benz SUVs. For the new GLE, the first installment, "We will feature top Japanese professionals as ambassadors, exploring the lesser-known attractions of Japan and Mercedes-Benz SUVs through their lifestyles and words." Professional surfer Masanori Ohno, who appears as an ambassador, attended the press conference.

"Mercedes-Benz has been my favorite, dream car since childhood, so being appointed as an ambassador means more than words can express. The first car I bought at 18 was a V-Class. I fondly remember traveling to competitions comfortably in that car," he shared, describing his relationship with Mercedes-Benz.

"I haven't driven the new GLE yet, but Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with 'the best of the best.' Beyond design and functionality, safety is paramount for me as I spend so much time traveling, and I believe there's no better car. I aim to continue pursuing new waves, challenges I've never taken on before, throughout my career with this GLE."

President Ueno commented, "Starting with the GLE, we plan to unveil several new models in the popular SUV segment," signaling an intensified push into the SUV market.
