A Beautiful Side Profile

A key design feature of the new A6 is its aesthetic. At the press conference, Audi Japan President Philipp Noack emphasized this point, commenting, "I find the side view particularly beautiful."

He further explained, "The contours over the powerfully flared wheel arches inherit quattro DNA, while the straight front end, long roofline, and gently sloping D-pillar create a sporty impression and a low visual center of gravity."

Regarding the quattro design DNA, Noack elaborated, "The quattro technology also influences the car's form. This is evident in the quattro blisters and the forward-shifted cabin, principles that are also visible in the new A6. It's a visual testament to quattro's all-wheel drive, distinct from front-wheel or rear-wheel drive. Therefore, the A6 is not just visually beautiful; it speaks to the technology, history, and culture within. In essence, the A6 represents an ethical beauty, not merely an ornamental one."

The interior, like that of the recently releasedAudi A8 and A7 Sportbackmodels, features the MMI touch response system. "It operates like a smartphone, eliminating almost all buttons from the dashboard, representing a truly new generation of interface," Noack introduced.

Features 48V Mild Hybrid and Four-Wheel Steering

The powertrain offered in Japan combines a 3-liter V6 engine with a 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) system, paired with a 7-speed S tronic and quattro all-wheel drive. It produces a maximum output of 340 hp and peak torque of 500 Nm, achieving 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds (European spec) and a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

The 48V mild hybrid system primarily consists of a belt-driven alternator starter (BAS) and a lithium-ion battery. The coasting function is available between 55 and 160 km/h, and the start/stop system engages when speeds drop below 22 km/h. Restarting from an engine stop is exceptionally smooth, thanks to the BAS.

During deceleration, the BAS recovers up to 12 kW of energy. The MHEV technology contributes to fuel efficiency improvements of up to 0.7 liters per 100 km (European reference value).

The A6's quattro system is a highly efficient, next-generation setup that actively predicts and controls torque distribution to the rear wheels, based on a front-wheel-drive foundation. When driving in front-wheel-drive mode, the propeller shaft and subsequent components are disengaged via a clutch, reducing energy loss from rotating shafts.

Later this year, models equipped with a 252 hp/370 Nm 2.0-liter inline-four TFSI engine and a 207 hp/400 Nm 2.0-liter inline-four TDI engine are scheduled to join the lineup.

The suspension features dynamic all-wheel steering. This system, designed to reconcile seemingly contradictory demands, provides excellent maneuverability in urban environments, agile handling on winding roads, and superior straight-line stability at high speeds. At low speeds below approximately 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite phase by up to 5 degrees, while at speeds above 60 km/h, they steer by up to 1.5 degrees in the same phase.

The price for the new A6 starts at 10,060,000 yen for the A6 55 TFSI quattro S line. To commemorate its launch, a limited-time model, the A6 55 TFSI quattro debut package, has been introduced with a price of 9,200,000 yen, reflecting a carefully considered balance of equipment. This package includes the S line exterior, which makes a strong visual statement, 20-inch wheels, LED headlights, and standard seats (partial leather). It also incorporates the front cross-traffic assist, typically an optional feature, creating a package that balances appearance and safety effectively.
