The "D5" Diesel Engine: A First for Volvo

Volvo has added its first diesel model to the 7-seater SUV, theXC90The "D5," a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel turbo engine, is making its Japanese debut in this new diesel variant.

It produces a maximum output of 173 kW (235 ps) at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 480 Nm (48.9 kgm) between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. This represents the most powerful powertrain in Volvo's clean diesel lineup.

The D5 engine features newly developed PowerPulse technology, which injects compressed air into the turbocharger during low-speed acceleration to reduce turbo lag, contributing to smoother starts and acceleration.

Furthermore, by employing an SCR catalytic converter that uses AdBlue® to reduce NOx (nitrogen oxides) in the exhaust gases, Volvo states that nitrous oxide is decomposed into nitrogen and water vapor, enabling improved fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

In terms of safety equipment, similar to other new-generation Volvo vehicles, it comes standard with over 16 safety and driver-assistance features under the "IntelliSafe" umbrella. These include the "Collision Avoidance and Mitigation Braking System with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection" featuring a new "Oncoming Vehicle Detection" function, and "Adaptive Cruise Control with Full Speed Range".

Pricing is set at 8.59 million yen for the entry-level "Momentum" grade and 9.44 million yen for the higher-spec "Inscription" grade.
