A Larger Body Meets the Inline-6 Diesel
The X5, which BMW calls a "Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)," has entered its fourth generation.
The new model continues the concept of the first generation that appeared in 1999. However, the size has increased, with a 40mm longer wheelbase, 25mm longer overall length, 65mm wider body, and 10mm taller height compared to the previous model. The body dimensions are now 4,935mm (L) x 2,005mm (W) x 1,770mm (H), creating a spacious interior. Furthermore, by using more high-tensile steel in the front structure compared to the previous model, the strength has been increased while achieving a weight reduction of approximately 15.5kg.
The suspension uses steel springs. A notable point is the introduction of a four-wheel adaptive air suspension for the first time in an X model for the M Sport model. Sensors installed at each wheel constantly detect road conditions and load. If necessary, the height of each wheel is automatically adjusted within a 40mm range, contributing to stable driving. The height can also be manually adjusted to suit preferences.
Currently, it is only available with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine, producing a maximum output of 195kW (265ps) and a maximum torque of 620Nm. It achieves 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.5 seconds.
Safety features include the latest driver assistance systems such as Reverse Assist, which supports steering operations when reversing, and a triple camera system. It is also equipped with "BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant," which allows remote vehicle control via AI-powered voice commands, and "BMW ConnectedDrive," which connects the vehicle to an IT network for access to various information.
The interior minimizes switches to create a sleek space. Below the large control display, a matte aluminum horizontal line extends, dividing the dashboard and enhancing the sense of spaciousness. The display and operation system features the "BMW Operating System 7.0" and a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster.
The price is 9.2 million yen for the X5 xDrive35d Standard and 9.99 million yen for the M Sport.
