Plug-in Hybrid with Enhanced Engine and Motor Output
The Mercedes-Benz "S-Class" is, needless to say, Mercedes' flagship sedan. The newly added "S 560 e Long" is a plug-in hybrid model that boasts increased engine and motor output compared to its predecessor, the "S 550 e Long," and a significantly larger lithium-ion battery capacity.
The "M276" 3.0-liter V6 direct-injection twin-turbo engine produces a maximum output of 270kW (376ps) and a maximum torque of 500Nm, delivering ample power even from the engine alone. This is combined with an electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 90kW (122ps) and a maximum torque of 440Nm, resulting in a system-wide maximum output of 350kW (476ps) and a maximum torque of 700Nm. This enables powerful and smooth acceleration, with the ability to drive on electric power alone up to 130 km/h.
The lithium-ion battery, manufactured by "Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE," a subsidiary of Daimler AG, has a capacity of 13.5kWh, a 55 percent increase from the 8.7kWh of the S 550 e Long, and a smaller physical size. Designed for future use in multiple models, it supports 6.0kW charging, reducing charging times.
A distinctive feature is the adoption of an "Intelligent Accelerator Pedal" with two functions for eco-driving. The "Pressure Point Function" increases resistance at the point where further acceleration would activate the engine in EV mode, alerting the driver. The "Double Pulse Function" uses radar to measure the distance and speed difference to the vehicle ahead, generating two tactile pulses on the pedal to discourage unnecessary acceleration.
In addition to the three-year, unlimited-mileage Mercedes Care warranty, a special extended warranty of four years is applied to all components, including the lithium-ion battery, for a total of seven years of coverage. The price is 16.97 million yen.
