Aston Martin Names First SUV 'DBX'
Aston Martin announced on November 15 that the official name for its first SUV model under development has been decided as 'DBX.' A video was also released showing Matt Becker, Aston Martin's Chief Engineer, driving the first prototype on a challenging rally course in Wales, UK.

Scheduled for Testing in Arctic, Middle Eastern Deserts, Autobahn, and Nürburgring
Aston Martin states that driving the first prototype in Wales marks the beginning of transitioning the various simulations conducted in the early stages of DBX development into the 'real world.' Future tests are planned in the Arctic with snow and ice, the scorching deserts of the Middle East, winding Alpine roads, and the ultra-high-speed courses of the German Autobahn and the Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop).
The DBX prototype in the video is camouflaged in dark gray with yellow lines. Its distinctive front grille with a red surround, a cabin compact in proportion to the body, and a raised rear center section are visible.
Matt Becker, who took the wheel of the prototype as it tackled off-road terrain, commented, 'We used driving simulators and made numerous adjustments during the development of the DBX. It requires immense effort to get an early prototype running on real roads, but this car demonstrated performance almost exactly as simulated. As an engineer, driving a car under development is an incredibly exciting experience. While the DBX is a completely different type of car from our traditional models, I am confident that through repeated testing, we can deliver a driving experience worthy of the Aston Martin brand to our customers.'
The DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2019, with production taking place at the new St Athan factory currently under construction in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. This facility will also produce the company's first electric vehicle, the 'Rapide E,' and is set to become Aston Martin's 'electrification hub.'
Andy Palmer, President and CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda, stated, 'The start of the DBX prototype's running is a memorable first chapter in the history of Aston Martin's first SUV model. It is the moment the program becomes a reality, and it is also the first model to be produced at the St Athan factory. A brilliant new era will begin in Aston Martin's long history.'
