Two Models Introduced Initially

The models being introduced to Japan are the "G 550" and the Mercedes-AMG "G 63" (hereinafter referred to as G 63). Both are equipped with a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo direct-injection engine.

The G 550's M176 engine produces a maximum output of 422 ps and a maximum torque of 610 Nm, and features a cylinder deactivation system. The G 63's M177 engine generates 585 ps and 850 Nm, an increase of 14 ps and 90 Nm over the previous generation.

The twin turbochargers are arranged in a hot-inside-V layout, positioned inside the V-cylinder banks rather than outside, making the engine as compact as possible. This layout also optimizes the intake and exhaust paths to the turbochargers, resulting in excellent responsiveness.

Regarding diesel engines, the company stated that they will consider their introduction based on market conditions.

All New Design Except for Three Parts

Similar to the previous model, the G-Class retains its signature square body, with all parts newly designed except for the door handles, rear spare tire cover, and headlight washers. However, it faithfully expresses the G-Class's characteristic features, such as the side protection molding, spare tire, door hinges, and the turn signals on the fenders.

The turn signals, in particular, were considered for removal as protruding objects due to pedestrian safety concerns. However, they were deemed essential as an iconic G-Class element and designed to retract inward upon impact. The window surrounds maintain their previous impression, but curved glass is used except for the rear, reducing air resistance and contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

With these improvements, the body size has increased to 4,817mm in length (+53mm) and 1,931mm in width (+64mm) compared to the previous model. Consequently, rear legroom has been extended by 150mm.

Regarding this design, Michael Bernhardt, Head of Product Planning for the G-Class at Daimler, commented:

"Charles Darwin said that the success of a species depends not only on strong genes but also on the ability to adapt and adjust to its surroundings. A prime example might be the crocodile. Crocodiles have adapted to their environment over millions of years. Yet, their fundamental 'design' has remained largely unchanged. This is very much the same for our G-Class," he stated.

Significantly Revised Interior

In contrast to the exterior, the interior has undergone significant changes. Designed by a woman, the interior features air vents that echo the headlights and speakers above them that evoke the turn signals, subtly reminding the driver of the G-Class's exterior design.

Meanwhile, characteristic elements such as the grab handle in front of the passenger seat and the chrome-finished switches for operating the three differential locks have been retained.

Furthermore, the interior color palette, which previously leaned heavily towards black leather, now offers a wider range of variations, including beige and brown, lending a more luxurious impression.

The most striking change is the dashboard. It now features a widescreen cockpit, integrating two 12.3-inch high-definition displays under a single glass cover, adopting the latest Mercedes-Benz dashboard design.

Enhanced Off-Road Capability

Naturally, the new G-Class retains its exceptional off-road performance. The suspension, developed by the G-Class engineering team in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG, combines a front double-wishbone independent suspension with a rear rigid axle. With a ground clearance of 270mm, it achieves the following off-road capabilities:

Climbing ability | Up to 100% on suitable terrain
Minimum ground clearance between front and rear axles | 24.1 cm (+6 mm compared to previous model)
Maximum wading depth | 70 cm in water/mud (+10 cm or more compared to previous model)
Maximum stable inclination angle | 35° (+7° compared to previous model)
Departure angle | 31° (+1° compared to previous model)
Approach angle | 31° (+1° compared to previous model)
Ramp breakover angle | 26° (+1° compared to previous model)

Simultaneously, a newly designed ladder frame suitable for off-road driving has been implemented. Constructed from steel plates up to 3.4mm thick formed into a "ロ" shape and assembled using MAG welding, it enhances the strength, rigidity, and safety required for tackling rough terrain.

Electromechanical Power Steering Enables Driver Assistance Systems

Significant improvements have also been made to the steering system. It has been changed from the traditional ball-and-nut type to an electromechanical rack-and-pinion system, greatly enhancing the driving feel. The steering characteristics can be adjusted according to the selected drive mode.

The adoption of an electromechanical system also allows for the integration of driver assistance systems such as Parking Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.

Five drive modes are available. In addition to "Comfort," "Sport," "Eco," and "Individual," which adjust the characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension, steering, and driver assistance systems, a new "G Mode" has been added.

This "G Mode" becomes active when any of the three differential locks are engaged or when the LOW RANGE off-road gear, which provides more than double the usual torque, is selected. It adjusts the chassis's adaptive dampers, steering, and accelerator response, while avoiding unnecessary gear shifts, to ensure optimal control and maximum off-road capability.

Previous Model to Be Sold Alongside for a Time

"Since its launch in 1979, the G-Class has maintained its distinctive square styling and high off-road performance, which our customers appreciate, while undergoing continuous improvements to meet the demands of the times. We have sold over 300,000 units worldwide," said Kintaro Ueno, President of Mercedes-Benz Japan.

"Its roots lie in the 'Geländewagen,' originally developed for border patrol use, which was then adapted for passenger cars. In 1980, it was chosen as the official car for the Pope, and in 2014, we sold the six-wheeled "G 63 AMG 6X6", giving it a truly unique history," he explained, detailing its lineage.

"It is also highly cherished in Japan, a market with a large number of G-Class enthusiasts," he added.

Given its popularity, the previous model will continue to be sold alongside the new one in Japan for some time. "We view the new model and the previous version, which retains the distinct aura of the Geländewagen born 39 years ago, as cars with fundamentally different tastes, not better or worse. This decision allows customers to choose the model that best aligns with their image of the G-Class," he stated.

Off-Road Experience Event Held

To coincide with the launch of the new G-Class, an off-road experience event, the "G-Class Experience," was held for a limited time from June 7th to 24th at "nextdoor," an experiential brand facility adjacent to Mercedes Me Tokyo.

The event featured three attractions: "Bridge," a course with an arch reaching approximately 45 degrees incline; "Mogul & Bank," simulating uneven terrain; and "Mountain Climb," ascending a slope to a height of about 9 meters.

A similar event is scheduled to take place at Grand Front Osaka, within "Mercedes Me Osaka," from July 14th to 16th.

Finally, Mr. Ueno remarked, "Within the Mercedes-Benz lineup, we offer 73 models with four-wheel drive, including the G-Class. Of these, 7 models and 42 variants are SUVs, ensuring we can meet a wide range of customer demands." He emphasized the company's continued focus on SUVs.
