All Models Feature Mild Hybrid System
The drivetrain system is equipped with a new mild hybrid technology (MHEV) featuring a 48-volt main power system. Integrated as a technical module are a lithium-ion battery and a belt-driven alternator starter, which regenerates up to 12 kW of power during braking to charge the battery. This enables functions such as coasting with the engine off for a set period and a start/stop system that activates from 22 km/h.
In terms of driving dynamics, it employs the quattro 4WD system, which normally distributes power 40:60 between the front and rear axles but can send the majority of power to either the front or rear axle when needed. Progressive steering, which varies the steering ratio with increasing steering angle, is also standard.
All-wheel steering, which steers the rear wheels up to 5 degrees, is available as an option. The suspension, supporting a minimum ground clearance of 254mm, features damping control. Adaptive air suspension, which adjusts the vehicle height by 90mm depending on the selected mode, is also available as an option.
The interior features a 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit and an MMI touch response display that blackens out and integrates with its surroundings when the ignition is off. Nearly all operations can be performed using voice commands or text input on the two displays: a 10.1-inch upper screen and an 8.6-inch lower screen.
The German specification includes MMI Navigation plus with LTE Advanced as standard. It offers a Wi-Fi hotspot function, navigation that recognizes driver preferences and calculates routes predictively, and "Car-to-X" services for traffic sign and hazard information utilizing swarm intelligence.
Advanced driver assistance features include the "Remote Garage Pilot," scheduled for introduction in early 2019. Using information from up to five radar sensors, six cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and one laser scanner, the system allows for automatic parking and unparking of the Q8 under the driver's supervision after they have exited the vehicle.
The new Q8 is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in the third quarter of 2018.
