Extended Driving Range
The Nissan Leaf, which accounts for over half of the global EV market share at 52 percent, has received a minor update. The driving range, previously rated at 200km, has been extended to 228km. Furthermore, the addition of an entry-grade 'S' model and the introduction of numerous exclusive options, including an audio system by BOSE, reflect user feedback and enhance the vehicle's overall refinement.
The extended driving range is attributed to several improvements: an expanded regenerative braking area, the adoption of a heat-shielding roof to improve air conditioning efficiency, standard-equipped seat heaters that directly warm occupants with minimal power, reducing the load on the air conditioning system, the introduction of heat pump heating, and additional air conditioning vent modes. Weight reduction through powertrain modifications also contributes significantly.
The powertrain features a vertically oriented unit. At the apex, integrated components including the charger, DC/DC converter, and junction box, previously located near the rear seat backrest, are now consolidated. Below this are the inverter, motor, and reduction gear, arranged in layers.
This redesign alone has achieved a weight reduction of 30kg compared to the previous model, and a remarkable 80kg for the entire vehicle.
Thoughtful Touches
With the charger relocated to the front, the luggage compartment capacity has increased from 330 liters to 370 liters. The frequently used charging port now includes a function to lock the charging connector only during charging or to keep it locked at all times. Additionally, an LED light illuminates the port as standard equipment. The control box on the charging cable has also been made smaller and lighter.
The powertrain modifications have also enhanced the vehicle's quietness. While an option, a dedicated high-fidelity audio system, 'BOSE Energy Efficiency,' is available, offering superior sound quality, lighter weight, and higher efficiency than standard audio systems. These features reflect user requests and can be considered thoughtful considerations.
Further enhancements include a battery level display in percent on the meter panel, memory function for the previously set drive mode (Normal/Eco), display of charging spot operating hours and availability in telematics, navigation along the most power-efficient route, and an estimated remaining battery level upon arrival at the destination. These additions are also a response to feedback from existing Leaf owners.
Addition of an Entry-Grade Model
The new Leaf offers optional leather interior appointments, 17-inch aluminum wheels for the 'G' grade, and enhanced luxury features. The exterior color palette has been updated to a total of seven colors, with one color removed and two new ones added.
Meanwhile, the addition of the entry-grade 'S' model is also noteworthy. Although it features some limitations, such as the absence of a heat pump air conditioner and air conditioning vent modes, its attractive price point of 3,349,500 yen is compelling. The mid-range 'X' model is priced at 3,757,950 yen (down from 3,764,250 yen in the previous model), and the top-tier 'G' grade is 4,133,850 yen (up from 4,063,500 yen).
