Volvo Begins Reservations for Compact SUV 'XC40'

Volvo Car Japan has announced that it will begin accepting reservations for the "XC40 T5 AWD R Design First Edition," a limited model, from January 29, ahead of the compact SUV "XC40's" introduction to Japan. The product announcement and launch are scheduled for March of this year.

New SUV Adopts CMA Platform for Compact Cars

The "XC40" is a compact SUV that utilizes the new "CMA (Compact Modular Architecture)" platform, developed by Volvo for compact cars. Its design, brimming with sporty and casual flair, is a key selling point, perfectly matching an urban lifestyle.

The exterior inherits the T-shaped headlights, a common icon of Volvo's new generation, inspired by the Norse mythology "Thor's Hammer," which began with Volvo's flagship SUV "XC90" entering its second generation, and the rear combination lamps that extend to the top of the vehicle. The body, more compact than the "XC60," features deeply sculpted lines with sharp edges on the front, hood, and side panels, creating a sharper design impression than its larger siblings.XC90"XC90"XC60"XC60"

The interior features the "SENSUS" 9-inch vertical touchscreen, the same as found in the "90 Series" and XC60. In terms of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies, it is also equipped similarly, with "IntelliSafe" as standard, including the "Collision Avoidance and Mitigation Full Auto Brake System with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection." Among the more than 16 features, "CTA (Cross Traffic Alert) with Auto Brake" has been newly added.

The powertrain for the First Edition, as indicated by the T5 grade name, is a new generation "Drive-E" 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine, producing a maximum output of 185 kW (252 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. It drives all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This is a limited edition of 300 units nationwide, priced at 5.59 million yen. Volvo plans to expand the XC40 lineup and sequentially release models in the price range of late 3 million to late 5 million yen after its introduction in March.
