First Sedan in M Series to Feature All-Wheel Drive
The "M5," which first appeared in 1984, has been reborn into its sixth generation. Based on the "5 Series" that arrived in Japan in February of this year, it was developed by BMW M, the division responsible for high-performance models.
A key highlight of the new model is the adoption of the M-specific all-wheel-drive system, "M xDrive," for the first time in an M model sedan. BMW claims this system supports maximum traction performance in various road conditions, while also offering Sport and 2WD modes to fully unleash the M model's character on circuits and other demanding environments.
The powertrain features a newly developed 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with new turbochargers. It produces a maximum output of 441 kW (600 ps) at 5,600-6,700 rpm and a maximum torque of 750 Nm (an increase of 70 Nm over the previous generation) at 1,800-5,600 rpm. Combined with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission offering three shift characteristics and the all-wheel-drive system, the car achieves 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.4 seconds.
The body incorporates a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof for the first time in the M5, along with an aluminum engine hood featuring a subtle pattern, contributing to weight reduction and enhanced rigidity. The prominent front air intakes not only improve cooling efficiency for the powertrain but also accentuate the M model's distinctive sporty presence.
Safety features are also comprehensively integrated, mirroring those of the 5 Series. A stereo camera within the rearview mirror and front/rear radar sensors instantly detect and warn of sudden stops or emerging hazards during daily driving. Furthermore, the Steering & Lane Control Assist enables partial autonomous driving by supporting following-vehicle tracking in traffic jams.
The price is ¥17,030,000, with deliveries commencing sequentially from April next year. The actual vehicle will make its Asian debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public on Saturday, October 28.
