Refinements for Production Readiness Aimed at 2020 Market Launch
The "I.D. CROSS II" announced this time is an evolved version of the "I.D. CROSS" presented at the Shanghai Motor Show in June. The body is a crossover model that fuses an SUV and a four-door coupe, with refinements for production incorporated into the headlights, front, and rear.
The interior has also been revised. The cabin, called "Open Space," features a versatile seat arrangement concept. With no B-pillar, opening the large sliding doors creates a wide aperture, allowing for the loading of items such as cross bikes.
Additionally, a newly developed "Clean Air" system ensures a constant supply of clean air inside the cabin, regardless of the surrounding environment. The menu screen displays information such as the cabin's air quality and system operating status, and voice commands can be used to open and close doors.
The powertrain features electric motors on both the front and rear axles, generating a total system output of 225 kW. The top speed reaches 180 km/h, and with a single charge, it can travel up to 500 km according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) measurement. The battery, located in the center of the vehicle, can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes using the rapid charging system.
It utilizes an electric all-wheel-drive system with torque distribution via an "Electric Propeller Shaft." Volkswagen claims that the suspension system, comprising electronic control dampers, newly developed multi-link rear suspension, and MacPherson struts, delivers high driving performance even on unpaved roads or in adverse weather conditions.
Volkswagen has already announced plans to launch three types of EVs: the four-door compact "I.D." and the "I.D. CROSS" SUV series in 2020, followed by the "I.D. BUZZ," a modern interpretation of the "BULLI" known for its "VW Bus" nickname, in 2022. The "I.D. CROSS II" unveiled this time is one of these models.
