The open-top versions of the AMG GT, which debuted this time,Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster / GT C Roadsterare two-seater open-top models based on the "Mercedes AMG GT," a sports car entirely developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG, described as "created by motorsport enthusiasts for those who love sports cars above all else." They feature a fully automatic, acoustically insulated soft top.
The soft top, a key feature of the GT Roadster, can be opened or closed automatically with a single switch on the overhead console, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h. The process takes just 11 seconds. Constructed from three layers of fabric, it folds into a Z-shape behind the seats when open, designed for space-saving and light weight. It is available in three colors: black, red, and beige.
The body retains the lightweight aluminum spaceframe structure of the base model. However, to achieve dynamic performance comparable to the coupe without a roof, the side skirts have been thickened, and reinforcements have been added to various areas, including the dashboard, rear axle, and behind the seats. The trunk lid is made of carbon fiber SMC, a lightweight material that contributes to weight reduction. This innovative, top-quality material was developed by Mercedes-Benz and jointly mass-produced with AMG.
Another distinctive exterior feature is the "AMG Panamericana grille" on the front section, characterized by its unique "shark nose" shape. This design, first seen on the legendary 1952 Carrera Panamericana Mexico-winning race car, the "Mercedes-Benz 300SL," is a prestigious element composed of 15 vertical chrome-plated fins.
The heart of both models is the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo direct-injection engine, the "M178," meticulously hand-assembled by a single master craftsman from start to finish under the "One man-one engine" philosophy. Key characteristics include a lower center of gravity due to the dry-sump lubrication system, which lowers the engine by 55mm, ensuring stable oil supply even under high lateral G-forces in high-speed corners. The "hot inside V" layout, with turbochargers positioned within the V of the cylinder banks, contributes to a compact engine design and excellent turbo response, maintaining the super sports car's inherent qualities.
Notably, the peak output and torque figures surpass those of the coupe "GT" and "GT S." The GT Roadster delivers 476 ps (350 kW) / 630 Nm, while the high-performance GT C Roadster boasts 557 ps (410 kW) / 680 Nm.
The transmission is the dual-clutch "AMG Speedshift DCT," which delivers engine power seamlessly to the rear wheels. Shift modes include "C" (Comfort), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport Plus), and "I" (Individual). The GT C Roadster additionally features a "RACE" mode for circuit driving.
The high-performance GT C Roadster, with its power-to-weight ratio of 2.98 kg/ps and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.7 seconds, comes standard with numerous fitting features. Firstly, the rear wheels are fitted with 20-inch rims to enhance traction and cornering speed, widening the rear track by 57mm for a more imposing stance.
Other features include the "AMG Rear Axle Steering" system for agile yet stable handling, "Dynamic Engine/Transmission Mounts" that automatically adjust stiffness based on driving conditions, the "AMG RIDE CONTROL" sports suspension with electronic damping, an electronic "AMG Limited Slip Differential," the fade-resistant "AMG High-Performance Brake System," and "AMG Performance Seats" with an Airscarf function to warm the neck with hot air.
Despite this array of high-performance capabilities, the inclusion of the "Distance Pilot DISTRONIC" adaptive cruise control as standard equipment demonstrates Mercedes' commitment to comfort, even in a sports car. The Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster is priced at 18.34 million yen, and the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster at 22.98 million yen. Both models are available by order only.
