Between the Range Rover Sport and Evoque
Currently, Land Rover has three main lines. One is the aforementioned "Range Rover" series. Then there is the "Discovery" series. And finally, the "Defender".
The Velar, introduced this time, is positioned within the Range Rover series, following the flagship "Range Rover" and preceding the "Range Rover Sport" and the "Range Rover Evoque".
Four engine options will be introduced in Japan. The gasoline engines include two versions of the 2-liter inline 4-cylinder: one with a maximum output of 250 ps and 365 Nm of torque, and another with 300 ps and 400 Nm. There is also a 3-liter V6 supercharged engine with a maximum output of 380 ps and 450 Nm of torque. The diesel option is a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder with a maximum output of 180 ps and 430 Nm of torque.
The 4-cylinder engines are Ingenium engines, designed and manufactured entirely by Jaguar Land Rover, for which a new factory was built. This marks the first introduction of the gasoline version in Japan (the diesel version has already been introduced).
These four engines are combined with eight grades: "Velar," "Velar S," "Velar SE," "Velar HSE," "Velar R-Dynamic," "Velar R-Dynamic S," "Velar R-Dynamic SE," and "Velar R-Dynamic HSE," resulting in a total of 32 models. Additionally, a limited edition V6 engine model, the "Velar First Edition," brings the total to 33 distinct specifications.

Design Embodying the "Less is More" Aesthetic
The exterior design is based on the concept of "reductionism," or the aesthetic of "less is more." Elegant lines are achieved through familiar Range Rover design cues such as a long rear overhang and a slanted front end. Modernity is expressed through the bonnet and clamshell roof.
An example of this reductionism is the door handles. The Velar features deployable door handles that retract into the door panel, a first for Land Rover. This not only improves aerodynamics but also contributes to a cleaner side profile.
The interior features four prominent displays. At the center, the latest infotainment system, "Touch Pro Duo," comprises two 10.2-inch touchscreens. Flanking the lower screen are two tactile dials. These dials, along with the touchscreens, allow for flexible control of various functions, including climate control and radio tuning. The touchscreens can be turned off, leaving only the two dials visible, creating a minimalist design aesthetic.
Additionally, a TFT virtual instrument panel and a head-up display are incorporated. The head-up display is a first for Japan; previously, it could not be offered due to interference with ETC signals, but it has now been introduced.
In addition to traditional leather materials, the interior trim offers a modern and durable premium textile as an option, a first for the automotive industry, developed in collaboration with Kvadrat.

Off-Road Capability Retained, Usability Enhanced
The Velar also emphasizes usability. The luggage space ranges from 673 liters to a maximum of 1,731 liters. Models equipped with electronic air suspension feature an Automatic Access Height function, allowing the vehicle's height to be adjusted for easier loading and unloading of luggage by raising or lowering the rear by 50 mm. Furthermore, upon engine shut-off or seatbelt release, the vehicle lowers by 10 mm, and opening the door lowers it an additional 30 mm, enhancing ingress and egress by leveraging the benefits of air suspension.
Other optional features include a power tailgate that can be operated with a foot gesture (optional) and the Activity Key, first introduced on the Jaguar "F-PACE". This wristband-like key allows the doors to be locked and unlocked by holding it near the "R" on the rear tailgate, even with the regular key inside the vehicle. When locked, the key inside the vehicle is deactivated.
Naturally, the Velar also boasts high off-road capabilities. One of its features is Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. Under normal conditions, torque is distributed 50:50 from the start to ensure maximum stability. To achieve optimal performance on-road, it can control torque distribution from 100% to the rear to 100% to the front, depending on road conditions.
The Terrain Response system, which optimizes the engine, gearbox, differentials, and suspension according to road conditions, is standard. Furthermore, Terrain Response 2 Auto, which monitors driving conditions and automatically adjusts the vehicle settings, is available as an option for all models except the First Edition.
It boasts an approach angle of 28.89 degrees, a departure angle of 29.50 degrees, and a maximum wading depth of 650 mm (for vehicles with air suspension).
Magnus Hansson, President of Jaguar Land Rover Japan, stated, "Land Rover is the world's only premium SUV specialist. Land Rovers combine distinctive and innovative, powerful design with premium elegance and unparalleled all-around off-road capability."
He continued, "The Range Rover family represents the top lineup of Land Rover. Since 1969, we have shaped the world's premium SUVs in terms of luxury, technology, and functionality. The Range Rover Velar marks a new chapter in the history of Range Rover, which will soon celebrate its 50th anniversary."
