Looking Ahead to PHV and Electrification
Bentley is making significant investments in reducing CO2 emissions, conserving water, and minimizing waste as part of its social and economic responsibilities as a luxury automotive brand. The company announced its certification by the Carbon Trust Standard as a testament to these efforts. The Carbon Trust Standard is an independent certification body that assesses the actions of companies and organizations in three areas—CO2 emissions, water usage, and waste—and certifies their commitment to achieving a sustainable society.
Solar panels have been installed on the roofs of the associated buildings at its headquarters in Pyms Lane, generating electricity that accounts for approximately 40 percent of the Crewe factory's consumption. This initiative is reported to reduce CO2 emissions by 2,500 tons annually. Alongside this clean energy sourcing, efforts to reduce consumption are also actively pursued; currently, the energy consumption required to produce a single Bentley vehicle has been halved compared to 2010 levels.
Water conservation is as important as energy efficiency. Bentley, which was first certified by the Carbon Trust Standard in 2014, is now further promoting water reduction, achieving a 6.1 percent decrease. In terms of waste, the company strives to approach zero by maximizing the potential for recycling and reuse.
Bentley's commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond its manufacturing facilities to its vehicles.
In its existing model lineup, the W12 engine featured in the SUV model, Bentaygareduces CO2 emissions by 11.9 percent compared to the previous W12 engine, thanks to features such as cylinder deactivation, start-stop technology, and a weight reduction of 30kg. Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid model is scheduled to be added to the Bentayga lineup in the near future. Beyond that, electrification is also on the horizon, as hinted by the electric vehicle concept, EXP 12 Speed 6e Conceptwhich was unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show.
Today, automotive manufacturers are expected not only to deliver on performance, safety, and design but also to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. This British luxury brand is taking these responsibilities seriously.
