Downsizing to a Twin-Turbo Engine with Cylinder Deactivation

The Audi, introduced in 2010,A8and its long-wheelbase version, the "A8 L." In Japan, three engine options were available, ranging from a 3-liter V6 to a 6.3-liter W12. The current update affects the mid-range model equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 engine.



The previous 4.2-liter naturally aspirated engine has been discontinued and replaced with a 4-liter V8 direct-injection twin-turbo engine. Despite the reduced displacement, maximum output has increased from 372 ps to 420 ps, and maximum torque has significantly risen from 445 Nm to 600 Nm.



Meanwhile, based on the downsizing concept, the new model incorporates a compact and lightweight turbocharger, an "energy recovery system" that converts deceleration energy into electrical energy stored in the battery, an idling stop system, and a "cylinder on demand system (cylinder deactivation system)" that deactivates four of the eight cylinders under certain driving conditions. These advancements have improved fuel efficiency to 9.8 km/L for the A8 and 9.6 km/L for the A8 L in the JC08 mode (previous figures were 8.3 km/L for the A8 and 8.1 km/L for the A8 L in the 10-15 mode).



The transmission is an efficient 8-speed Tiptronic, which aids in improving engine fuel economy. All models feature "quattro" (full-time 4WD). The car is also equipped with "adaptive air suspension" and the "Audi pre sense" safety system.



The price for the updated "A8 4.0 TFSI quattro" is 12,000,000 yen. The long-wheelbase "A8 L 4.0 TFSI quattro" is priced at 13,350,000 yen. The unchanged "A8 3.0 TFSI quattro" is 9,620,000 yen, and the top-of-the-line "A8 L W12 quattro" is 20,610,000 yen.
