Audi's announcement in Detroit was the "Q8" concept, its first full-size SUV. With a 2018 launch announced, this model signals Audi's new direction.
The design pays homage to the original "Quattro" from 1980 with its flat, wide C-pillars and flared shoulders over the wheels. Simultaneously, a contemporary, relatively low roofline creates a coupe-like silhouette. Inside, however, there is ample space for four occupants and generous luggage.
For driving assistance, an augmented reality (AR) head-up display is available. For instance, it can project virtual navigation arrows as if overlaid onto the actual road.
The powertrain utilizes a plug-in hybrid system. The entire system generates a maximum output of 330 kW and 700 Nm of torque, driven by all-wheel drive.
Also making its world debut wasthe new "Q5"its sportiest model, the "SQ5 3.0TFSI." The 3.0-liter V6 engine produces a maximum output of 260 kW (354 ps) and 500 Nm of torque. Despite being an SUV, it achieves 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.
Additionally, optional features include a sport differential that actively controls torque distribution between the rear wheels and dynamic steering that adjusts its ratio based on driving conditions. The design is also differentiated from the Q5 through exclusive exterior parts.
The "SQ5 3.0TFSI" is slated for sale in its home market of Germany starting mid-2017.
In addition, Audi also unveiled the new"A5" and "S5"cabriolets to the public for the first time. They feature a classic soft-top that can be opened or closed while driving at speeds below 50 km/h. The powertrain options include the "A5 Cabriolet" with a 190 ps 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI, and the "S5 Cabriolet" generating 354 ps from its 3.0 TFSI. Sales in Germany and other European countries begin this March.
