Diesel Engines Introduced for 5 Series Sedan and Touring Models

BMW has added the "523d," its first diesel model for the 5 Series in Japan, to both its sedan and touring lineups, and has begun accepting orders.

The Third BluePerformance Arrives

Following BMW's previous releases,BMW X5 xDrive35d BluePerformance
and the recently announcedBMW 320d BluePerformanceclean diesel models, the company has now unveiled the "523d" with a clean diesel engine for the 5 Series and commenced accepting orders. Deliveries are scheduled to begin sequentially from September.

With the addition of diesel engine variants for both the 5 Series sedan and touring models, BMW's clean diesel offerings in Japan now comprise four models.

The engine fitted is the same 2-liter, inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel used in the "320d BluePerformance," producing a maximum output of 184 ps at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 380 Nm between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm. This is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Naturally, it also features an engine auto start/stop function and a brake energy regeneration system to enhance fuel efficiency. Despite its substantial size, the vehicle achieves a fuel economy of 16.6 km/ℓ under the JC08 mode, meeting the "FY2015 Fuel Economy Standards +20%" target.

Furthermore, it complies with the Post New Long-Term Regulations and is certified as an "Eco-Car" eligible for tax reductions. Both the automobile acquisition tax and weight tax are fully waived, and it also qualifies for the "Subsidies for Promotion of Clean Energy Vehicle Introduction," potentially receiving up to ¥100,000 in subsidies.

Pricing is set at ¥6.33 million for the sedan model, the "BMW 523d BluePerformance," and ¥6.63 million for the wagon model, the "BMW 523d BluePerformance Touring."
