A First Look at the Soon-to-be-Launched New "3008"

Peugeot Citroën Japon unveiled the new Peugeot "3008" SUV, scheduled for release next year, at the "NEW SUV PEUGEOT 3008 AMPLIFIED EXPERIENCE TOUR" event held at dealerships nationwide. While detailed specifications and pricing will be announced later, the launch is expected around February 2017.

Two Models to be Introduced to Japan: 1.6-Liter Gasoline and 2.0-Liter Diesel Turbo

The new "3008" has been developed with Peugeot's full technological prowess to enter the highly popular SUV market. Two models are planned for introduction in Japan: one with a 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine producing 165ps paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and another with a 2.0-liter diesel turbo "BlueHDi" producing 180ps, also paired with a 6-speed automatic.

While dimensions are approximate, the vehicle measures 4,450mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and 1,630mm in height. Compared to the current model's 4,365mm length, 1,840mm width, and 1,630mm height, only the length has been slightly extended, with other dimensions remaining the same. The wheelbase has been extended by 60mm to increase rear legroom. The platform has been updated to the latest version, known as "EMP2," which is also used in the308"new Peugeot 308."

This platform adoption has also created more headroom and shoulder room. Furthermore, the luggage space has reportedly increased by approximately 90 liters.

Mr. Manabu Uemura, Product Manager at the company, explained, "It's not just about looks; practicality has also been improved. Leveraging the powertrain and lightweight body, it offers not only powerful SUV driving but also nimble and quick handling, making it feel like an extension of a hatchback. This is a major selling point."

A hands-free electric tailgate, a first for Peugeot, is also available as an option. By placing your foot under the tailgate, it can be opened and closed without touching it. An electric glass roof is also offered as an option. "Customers will enjoy the variety of choices available at the time of purchase," Mr. Uemura added.

The Evolved i-Cockpit

The most significant feature of the new 3008 is its greatly evolved "i-Cockpit." This i-Cockpit, which redefines the traditional dashboard, has been featured since the "208" debuted in 2012, characterized by a driving position where the meters are viewed over a small steering wheel. Peugeot calls this instrument cluster area the head-up display, and the new "3008" adopts a 12.3-inch digital version, allowing the driver to customize the display freely.

The display content can be controlled with a button located below the left side of the steering wheel. In addition to the tachometer and speedometer, it can be customized to show essential driving information, such as G-force during driving or engine oil temperature. Mr. Uemura commented, "It offers both aesthetic appeal and unique customizability."

Additionally, the 8-inch touchscreen on the center of the dashboard consolidates controls for frequently used functions such as audio, climate control, navigation, phone, and vehicle settings. To ensure instantaneous screen switching, toggle switches are provided at the bottom. The driver first selects the desired screen using these toggle switches.

As mentioned, the compact steering wheel is another distinctive feature. The new design features a flat top and bottom, reducing visual strain for the driver. While minimal, the increased knee room also contributes to a sense of security when seated in the driver's position.

No 4WD Option; Grip Control Handles Traction

Regarding the exterior design of the new 3008, Mr. Uemura explained, "The front features a large, vertically oriented grille and a long, relatively flat bonnet, creating a powerful impression at first glance." Both the headlights and rear combination lamps utilize LEDs.

A key feature of the side view is "the very high waistline and the narrowed glass area. As a result, it doesn't give the impression of a large, heavy body, but rather a sporty side view that conveys a sense of acceleration." Furthermore, the protective elements, adapted for an SUV, are designed slightly wider than usual to emphasize the vehicle's height. All models come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of driving dynamics, the 3008 does not offer a 4WD option. However, it is equipped with Peugeot's proprietary Advanced Grip Control. This system allows selection from five modes: Normal, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Off, each optimizing traction accordingly. Additionally, Hill Descent Control, which prevents rollback during hill starts, is now included.

Safety features include Active Safety Brake, Active Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Active Blind Spot Monitoring.

Event Held to Experience the New 3008 Firsthand

There is an opportunity to see the new 3008 before its official release. This is the "NEW SUV PEUGEOT 3008 AMPLIFIED EXPERIENCE TOUR," a series of events held at 15 Peugeot dealerships nationwide. The tour consists of three main parts: an exhibition of the Peugeot 3008, a VR test drive experience (as actual test drives are not yet possible), and a configurator using iPads.

Mr. Luca Fenner, Marketing Manager at Peugeot Citroën Japon, stated, "The Peugeot 3008 is an innovative model in terms of both technology and driving experience, and it represents Peugeot's SUV strategy. In essence, it is no exaggeration to call it a revolution for Peugeot." He added, "Thanks to this revolution, we expect to attract new customers who may not have previously considered Peugeot." He further explained the event's purpose: "We must ensure this revolution is smoothly integrated. Therefore, we are holding events like this to allow existing and potential new customers to experience it as soon as possible."

The NEW SUV PEUGEOT 3008 AMPLIFIED EXPERIENCE TOUR began at Peugeot Meguro, will tour cities like Sendai and Sakai, and conclude in late March next year at Peugeot Chuo in Tokyo.
