Following the launch of the "3 Series" last September, and the refresh of engines in models such as the "4 Series", the wave of engine updates has now reached the diesel engine, with the "320d" also transitioning to a new generation engine.
The new generation diesel engine is a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder unit. It features an newly adopted aluminum alloy crankcase and is combined with the latest common rail direct injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger, representing a significant evolution.
Consequently, the specifications are more powerful. Paired with an 8-speed automatic or 8-speed sport automatic transmission, the maximum output is 140 kW (190 ps) at 4,000 rpm, a 5 kW (6 ps) increase over the previous model. Maximum torque is 400 Nm (40.8 kgm) at 1,750-2,500 rpm, an increase of 20 Nm (2.1 kgm). Meanwhile, the JC08 mode fuel economy has improved by approximately 10 percent to 21.4 km/ℓ.
The new engine complies with Japan's post-new long-term regulations for diesel vehicles, making it fully exempt from automobile acquisition tax and weight tax. Furthermore, the automobile tax for the following year will be reduced by 75 percent.
In addition, with the engine change, all grades except the entry-level "320 SE" will come standard with the "Lane Change Warning" safety feature. This system alerts the driver to vehicles in their blind spot or rapidly approaching from the overtaking lane.
The price for the 320d models equipped with the new engine ranges from 5.12 million yen to 5.57 million yen for the sedan, and 5.34 million yen to 5.79 million yen for the Touring model.
BMW also announced that it will release the "Celebration Edition 'Style Edge'," based on the 320d, as the third model in its 100th-anniversary special limited edition series. A total of 400 units will be available starting Saturday, May 28.
Based on the top-grade "M Sport" model paired with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission, this special edition features exclusive alloy wheels and kidney grilles. The interior is stylishly appointed with piano lacquer black trim and leather seats.
The price is 5.77 million yen for the sedan and 5.99 million yen for the station wagon Touring.
