Compact SAV "X1" Receives Minor Model Change in Home Market

BMW has given its smallest SAV, the "X1," a minor model change in its home market for the first time in two and a half years. The engine and transmission have been updated to improve environmental performance.

Improvements in Both Power and Environmental Performance

The "X1" is the most compact model in BMW's X series of SAVs (Sports Activity Vehicles) and has been sold in Japan since April 2010. This X1 has now undergone a minor model change in Germany.

The reborn X1 features a total of eight engines: three gasoline and five diesel. All gasoline engines are 2-liter inline 4-cylinder units employing direct fuel injection with Valvetronic and Double VANOS. There is one naturally aspirated model and two TwinPower Turbo variants with different power outputs. The entry-grade model with a naturally aspirated engine, producing up to 115kW (150ps), is the "sDrive 18i." The mid-range turbo models producing 135kW (184ps) are the rear-wheel-drive "sDrive 20i" and the all-wheel-drive "xDrive 20i." The top-tier model, also a 2-liter turbo, produces 180kW (245ps) and is named the "xDrive 28i."

The diesel engines consist of four variants of a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine equipped with TwinPower Turbo, variable intake geometry, and common rail direct injection, differing in power output. The entry-grade "sDrive 16d" produces up to 85kW (116ps), the "sDrive 18d" and "xDrive 18d" produce 105kW (143ps), the "xDrive 20d" produces 135kW (184ps), and there is the "xDrive 20d EfficientDynamics Edition" focused on environmental performance. The xDrive 20d EfficientDynamics Edition offers sufficient power of up to 120kW (163ps) while boasting excellent environmental performance with a fuel consumption of 4.5L/100km (approximately 22.2km/L) and CO2 emissions of 119g/km according to EU test cycle values.

Among the diesel engine models, there is also a top-tier "xDrive 25d" that generates a maximum output of 160kW (218ps). This model features a 2-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine with multi-stage variable intake geometry, twin turbochargers, and piezo injectors, achieving high performance by increasing fuel pressure up to 2000 bar, resulting in a massive torque of up to 450Nm.

The transmission is primarily a 6-speed manual, with an 8-speed automatic transmission, a rare option for this class of BMW, available as an option. The entry-grade sDrive 18i is the only model with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the engines, familiar BMW eco-friendly features such as "ECO PRO mode," "Brake Energy Regeneration," and "Auto Start-Stop" have been incorporated to improve fuel efficiency.

The luggage capacity is 460 liters with the rear seats up, capable of storing two golf bags side-by-side. With the rear seats folded down, it expands to a maximum of 1,360 liters, creating space to store golf bags vertically. Standard equipment includes heated power-folding mirrors, fog lamps, LED taillights, chrome tailpipe finishers, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a CD player. Optional features include HDD navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic glass roof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power seats, rain sensors, and a heated steering wheel.
