Engine Downsizing Too

Mercedes-Benz's compact open-top model, the "SLK Class," has received a facelift and, simultaneously, a name change to "SLC." This new name is part of Mercedes' ongoing effort to unify its model nomenclature, combining the prefix "SL" representing open-top models with the designation "C" to signify its class positioning.

A significant exterior change to the new SLC is the adoption of a diamond radiator grille at the front. While the standard configuration features a black grille with silver louvers, models equipped with the AMG Line or Night Package will have a silver grille with silver or chrome louvers.

The interior offers dark or light aluminum trim, or a carbon fiber finish. The instrument panel features a sporty design with two circular binnacles surrounding the gauges, between which sits a TFT LCD display for information.

The new SLC Class introduces the "SLC 180" as the entry-level model, powered by a 1.6-liter inline-4 turbo engine producing 115 kW (156 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. The "SLC 200" and "SLC 300" both utilize the same 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine but are tuned differently, delivering 135 kW (184 hp) and 180 kW (245 hp) respectively. A diesel variant, the "SLC 250 d," is also available, with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque.

Replacing the previous "SLK 55 AMG" is the Mercedes-AMG "SLC 43." This model is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine, generating 270 kW (367 hp) and 520 Nm of torque. It boasts a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Sales Begin in 2016, Marking 20th Anniversary

The transmission for the SLC 180 and SLC 200 is a 6-speed manual as standard, with a 9-speed automatic, the 9G-TRONIC, available as an option. All other models come with the 9G-TRONIC. Models equipped with the 9G-TRONIC feature "DYNAMIC SELECT," which allows for integrated adjustment of the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension across five modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Eco, and Individual.

The Mercedes-AMG SLC 43, meanwhile, uses the 9G-TRONIC SPORT transmission. In Sport and Sport+ modes, it achieves rapid gear changes and features a downshift blipping function for smoother shifts and a sportier feel. The suspension is a sports suspension as standard, with an optional AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. A mechanical limited-slip differential at the rear enables controllable cornering.

The new SLC Class also boasts updated safety features. Many of Mercedes' latest functions are available as standard or optional, including Active Brake Assist for automatic emergency braking, Blind Spot Assist to warn of vehicles in blind spots, Lane Keeping Assist to prevent lane departure, LED headlights, and Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus for automatic high beam control.

The distinctive retractable hardtop, the "vario-roof," remains a key feature. It can be opened or closed at speeds up to 40 km/h, and an electro-chromatic sunblind, "MAGIC SKY CONTROL," which allows for variable tinting, is also available. Trunk capacity is up to 335 liters.

The new SLC Class, expected to debut at the Detroit Motor Show, will go on sale in mid-January 2016, marking the 20th anniversary of the original "SLK" which was first introduced in 1996. Detailed specifications and pricing are scheduled to be announced at that time.
