15% Fuel Efficiency Improvement Over Base Model
Last year'sTokyo Motor ShowThe BMW hybrid model based on the 5 Series, the "Activehybrid5" has finally been released in Japan.
The electric motor, with an output of 40kW (55ps), is positioned between the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine (inherited from the 535i) and the transmission, delivering a total maximum output of 240kW (340ps) and a peak torque of 450Nm (45.9kgm). In addition to hybrid driving, it is also capable of approximately 3-4km of EV driving at speeds below 60km/h.
The engine incorporates "BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology," featuring direct injection, variable valve lift (Valvetronic), variable valve timing (Double VANOS), and a twin-scroll turbocharger, technologies also found in BMW's eco-friendly models. Combined with features such as an idling stop system, brake energy regeneration, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and a "coasting mode" that automatically disengages the engine when the accelerator is released, it achieves fuel economy of 14.6km/ℓ in the 10-15 mode and 13.6km/ℓ in the JC08 mode.
Only a ¥100,000 Difference Compared to the 535i
The dimensions are identical to the 5 Series at 4,910mm in length, 1,860mm in width, and 1,475mm in height. However, due to the integration of the hybrid system, the vehicle weight has increased by 140kg to 1,960kg compared to the 535i's 1,820kg. Furthermore, the trunk capacity is reduced from 520 liters to 375 liters because the lithium-ion battery is housed above the rear axle.
In terms of equipment, it features exclusive wheels and tailpipes. In addition to the 535i's equipment, it comes standard with a 4-zone automatic climate control system that utilizes a high-performance battery, allowing for comfortable cabin temperature settings via remote control before entering the vehicle.
The price is ¥8,500,000, only ¥100,000 more than the 535i. It meets the "FY2010 Fuel Economy Standards +25%" and "Level 75% Reduction in 2005 Emissions Standards (★★★★ Low-Emission Vehicle)" and is eligible for a 100% exemption from acquisition tax and weight tax under the eco-car tax reduction program, as well as qualifying for the eco-car subsidy. Reservations have already begun, with deliveries scheduled to start in mid-April 2012.
