Balancing Performance and Environmental Friendliness

The engine in the X3 xDrive 20i features BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, combining direct injection, Valvetronic variable valve lift control on the intake side, Double VANOS for optimal adjustment of intake and exhaust valve timing, and a twin-scroll turbocharger. It produces a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 270Nm between 1,250 and 4,500rpm, driving all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Key differences in standard equipment compared to the xDrive 28i and xDrive 35i include 17-inch tires (225/60R17) – the 28i uses 245/50R18 and the 35i uses 245/45R19 – and cloth seats (leather for the 35i).

Compared to the 28i and 35i models equipped with 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines, the fuel economy expected from this downsizing is 14.0km/ℓ in the 10-15 mode (10.6km/ℓ for the 28i, 12.0km/ℓ for the 35i) and 13.2km/ℓ in JC08 mode (10.0km/ℓ for the 28i, 11.0km/ℓ for the 35i). This achieves the "FY2010 Fuel Economy Standard +25%" and "Heisei 17 Emission Standards 75% Reduction Level (★★★★ Low Emission Vehicle)". It qualifies for the eco-car tax reduction (75% reduction in automobile acquisition tax and weight tax) and the eco-car subsidy.
