The Convergence of Cars and Information Technology
CeBIT is the world's largest trade fair for information and communication technology, where IT-related companies such as Intel and AMD exhibit. In recent years, the relationship between cars and IT has become increasingly intimate, as seen in the partnership between Microsoft and Toyota. This marks Audi's second exhibition following CES (the largest IT trade show in the US) held last month in Las Vegas.
Under the slogan "mobility network" that networks cars, "Audi connect" serves as an interface to connect cars via the internet. Currently, communication is through FOMA (3rd generation), but future plans include communication using LTE (4th generation).
This "Audi connect" will be adopted in the new A3It will be incorporated into the Volkswagen Group's new "Modular Infotainment Platform (MIB)"allowing for a reduction in development time for vehicle information and communication systems. In terms of hardware, it employs NVIDIA's Tegra chip, known for its power efficiency and graphic processing capabilities, which is also used in smartphones and tablet PCs from various manufacturers. Operation is designed for high usability, utilizing a touchpad mounted above the dial on the center console.
The new A3, which will feature this new IT technology, is scheduled for its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, held around the same time. However, CeBIT will be its first public unveiling in Germany. This indicates Audi's strong commitment not only to the car itself but also to the field of information and communication.
Regarding "cars and IT," Japan has also seen various initiatives, such as Honda's "Internavi," which quickly provided information on passable roads based on driving history after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and Toyota's "G-BOOK." Audi, along with other global manufacturers, is seriously investing in ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), which is expected to improve traffic conditions and enhance safety in urban areas.
