A Core Model in the Mid-to-Long-Term Strategy

The new SUV "Macan" announced by Porsche AG is the model that the company decided to launch in 2010, and was then called "Cajun." Macan means "tiger" in Indonesian, and according to Porsche, this name embodies suppleness, power, allure, and dynamism.

Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, stated, "The Macan is a true Porsche model that not only possesses all the elements of a sports car but also offers the advantages unique to an SUV."

The Macan, which will be Porsche's fifth model range, is positioned as a pivotal model in "Strategy 2018," a 10-year plan by the Volkswagen Group to surpass Toyota Motor Corporation by 2018 and become the world's leading automotive manufacturing and sales group with annual sales of 10 million units. Porsche aims to replicate the success of its first SUV, the "Cayenne," with this Macan.

Production is expected to begin in 2013 at the Leipzig plant, which is scheduled for a major expansion to accommodate the Macan.
