Mercedes-Benz Announces Domestic Launch of New V-Class

Engine: A Diesel Exclusive to Japan

The new V-Class model introduced in Japan is equipped exclusively with a 2.2-liter inline four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, producing a maximum output of 120 kW (163 ps) and peak torque of 380 Nm. This is a BlueTEC clean diesel, which significantly reduces NOx by removing particulate matter with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and then inducing a chemical reaction with urea SCR.

Notably, this engine is not available in the home market; it was specifically developed to meet Japan's stringent emissions regulations. Paired with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, it achieves a fuel economy of 15.3 km/ℓ under the JC08 mode.

While there is only one powertrain option, three body variations are offered. The standard "V 220 d Trend" and "V 220 d" feature a wheelbase of 3,200 mm and a body length of 4,905 mm. The "V 220 d Avantgarde Long" extends the body to 5,150 mm, while the "V 220 d Avantgarde Extra-Long" increases the wheelbase to 3,430 mm and the overall length to 5,380 mm, surpassing even the long-wheelbase S-Class. All body types share a width of 1,930 mm and a height of 1,880 mm.

The suspension system utilizes MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-trailing arm independent suspension at the rear. Except for the V 220 d Trend, all models come standard with the AGILITY CONTROL suspension featuring selective damping, which adjusts hydraulic resistance to provide optimal damping force based on driving conditions, promising superior ride comfort and stable cornering performance.

Highly Flexible Seat Arrangements

The rear seats are not fixed; they are positioned on seat rails on a flat floor, allowing for flexible configurations of both the second-row individual seats and the third-row bench seat. All seats are equipped with three-point seat belts, and they can be removed or installed facing backward, enabling lounge-like arrangements. An optional stowable center table is available for the V 220 d Avantgarde Extra-Long.

The expansive luggage capacity ranges from 720-4,500 liters for the standard body, 1,030-5,000 liters for the long body, and an impressive 1,410-5,500 liters for the extra-long version. To facilitate easier loading in confined spaces, the rear tailgate includes a feature that allows only the glass hatch to be opened.

The vehicle is also equipped with the latest safety and comfort features. Standard equipment includes "ATTENTION ASSIST," which detects driver fatigue through over 70 parameters and issues a warning if attention levels decrease, and "CROSSWIND ASSIST," which automatically counteracts instability caused by strong crosswinds, a common issue for tall vehicles. Additionally, "COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (CPA)" with radar-based collision warning, "DISTRONIC PLUS" adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and "BLIND SPOT ASSIST," which warns of vehicles in blind spots during lane changes, are standard on the V 220 d Avantgarde Extra-Long and optional on other models.

Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz Japan has developed genuine accessories specifically for discerning Japanese customers. These include a rear entertainment system for rear passengers, an overhead space net for storing small items, a bicycle holder, and a tailgate tent that can be attached to the rear gate.

Pricing for the new V-Class starts at 5.35 million yen for the V 220 d Trend standard body, and 6.2 million yen for the V 220 d. The slightly longer V 220 d Avantgarde Long is priced at 6.95 million yen, while the V 220 d Avantgarde Extra-Long, with its long wheelbase and extended body, costs 7.3 million yen. All models are eligible for Japan's new eco-car tax reduction and green vehicle tax incentives.
