The First Compact SUV in the Family

A new member, the "500X" joins the Fiat "500," which has enjoyed strong sales since its introduction to the Japanese market in 2008. The 500X is the first compact SUV in the "500 family" and also serves as the third derivative model in the 500 series in Japan, following the "500" and "500C."

The interior and exterior design, which clearly conveys its "500 family" heritage, inherits the identity of the original 500 born in 1957 and is adapted as a modern compact SUV. In other words, while evoking a sense of commonality with the current 500, which shares the same DNA, it is endowed with the robustness of an SUV and a friendly front face reminiscent of previous 500 models. The body size, at 4,250mm long, 1,795mm wide, and 1,610mm high for the front-wheel-drive model, is larger than the 500, which fits within the 5-number plate size, but the cabin space and luggage room have been expanded, improving practicality.

The cockpit is designed with the driver's visibility and operability prioritized, centered around the driver's seat, and the steering wheel features tilt and telescopic adjustment. While maintaining an SUV-like style, the seating position is set at a height of 669mm (697mm for 4WD models) for excellent ease of entry and exit. Furthermore, dedicated dashboard designs and seat upholstery options create a mature design with a sense of premium quality.

All models are equipped with a 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder MultiAir turbo engine. However, the specifications differ between FF and 4WD. The FF model delivers a maximum output of 140ps at 5,000rpm and a maximum torque of 230Nm at 1,750rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and achieves a fuel consumption of 15.0 km/L under the JC08 mode.

Meanwhile, the 4WD model adopts a 9-speed automatic transmission, a first for FIAT. Furthermore, the engine specifications are also improved, with a maximum output of 170ps at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque of 250Nm at 2,500rpm. Fuel consumption is 13.1 km/L. Additionally, all models are equipped with a "Drive Mood Selector," allowing drivers to choose modes according to driving conditions and road surfaces.

The 4WD system is also a first for FIAT, with its main feature being the rear axle disconnect function. This allows for front-wheel drive only in driving situations where 4WD is not needed, such as on highways, reducing energy loss and contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

The 500X shares its platform with the Jeep "Renegade", which was recently introduced, but its development and production are carried out in Italy. FIAT and Chrysler jointly advanced the project, resulting in the birth of distinctive small SUVs from each brand.

The grade lineup consists of three models: the "Popstar" for FF, the "Popstar Plus" with upgraded equipment, and the "Cross Plus" for 4WD. The prices are 2,862,000 yen, 3,078,000 yen, and 3,348,000 yen, respectively. FCA Japan explains that the Cross Plus is the most affordable imported SUV model with 4WD and has been priced competitively.
