40% Improvement in Fuel Economy and CO2 Emissions
Since its market introduction in 2003, the "Continental GT" has achieved exceptional sales figures for a luxury coupe, recording over 50,000 units sold worldwide and serving as a catalyst that tenfolded Bentley's total production. Until now, it was exclusively offered with a 6-liter W12 twin-turbo engine. However, the addition of a new 4.0-liter V8 engine model has now been announced.
The adoption of this powertrain is, naturally, primarily driven by environmental considerations. The engine, featuring direct injection and optimized thermal management, boasts a variable displacement system that seamlessly transitions from V8 to V4 mode during low-load driving or cruising. This is complemented by a new generation of highly efficient turbochargers. While specific figures have not been released, these advancements reportedly result in a 40% improvement in both fuel economy and CO2 emissions compared to the W12 model.
On the other hand, it delivers substantial performance with a maximum output of 507 ps (373 kW) at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 660 Nm between 1,700 and 5,000 rpm. Paired with a new-generation 8-speed close-ratio automatic transmission, it achieves 0-100 km/h in under 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h. As before, the all-wheel-drive system distributes torque with a rear bias of 40:60.
The exterior features distinct elements to differentiate it from the W12 model, including a gloss black grille with a chrome frame and center bar, conveying strength and robustness, and a red winged "B" badge on the front. The rear is characterized by distinctive "figure-eight" shaped chrome exhaust tailpipes.
The vehicle comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, with an option to select 21-inch six-spoke wheels finished in diamond silver or diamond black.
While the latest W12 model saw its convertible version announced slightly later, the V8 model appears to be launching simultaneously in both coupe and convertible forms. The unveiling is scheduled for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, commencing January 9th next year. Given the prior rumors, this is one model eagerly awaited for its debut.
