The Ferrari "488 GTB," unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March and only arriving in Japan this past May, has already been followed by its open-top sibling, the "488 Spider." Images and details were released on the 28th, Central European Time.

Ferrari's New Generation Spider
Ferrari concluded the first half of the season with Sebastian Vettel taking the checkered flag at the Hungaroring for F1 Round 10. Just before the summer break, they suddenly announced the "488 Spider," the successor to the "458 Spider."
Ferrari typically introduces a Spider model one to two years after the coupe's debut, but this time,The 488 GTB Arrives in Februaryit was unveiled in the unusually short span of just five months since its February debut. While the "GTS (Gran Turismo Spider)" name, echoing the "308" series that inspired the 488 GTB's name, was rumored to make a comeback, the "Spider" name has been retained as before.
The codename is "142M S." Many Ferrari enthusiasts will likely know that "142" refers to the V8 Berlinetta (coupe) "458 Italia," "M" stands for Modified, and "S" signifies Spider. Thus, 142M refers to the "488 GTB," and "S" means Spider.
The body color in the released photos is the new Blu Corsa. The exterior design is based on the earlier coupe version,488 GTBand largely shares the same styling. Naturally, as a spider model, the rear has undergone significant changes, but the new model continues to feature a two-piece retractable hardtop. The aluminum roof retracts into the rear decklid by flipping 180 degrees, and the opening and closing process takes a mere 14 seconds, ensuring a stress-free experience.
Spiders require various measures to ensure rigidity due to the absence of a fixed roof, and the 488 Spider is no exception. To meet the structural requirements of each chassis component, 11 different aluminum alloys, including magnesium and other non-corrosive metals, are used to achieve torsional and beam rigidity equivalent to the coupe model. Ferrari announces a 23 percent improvement compared to the previous generation.

Furthermore, the new model is equipped with the latest electronic control systems, similar to the coupe. The advanced dynamic vehicle control system "Side Slip Angle Control System (SSC2)," which also manages the active dampers, combined with F1-Trac and E-Diff3, maximizes performance even on winding roads with tight corners, increasing corner exit speed by 12 percent.
The power unit is the same 3,902cc V8 twin-turbo engine found in the 488 GTB. The specifications remain unchanged, delivering a maximum output of 492 kW (670 hp) at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 760 Nm (77.5 kgm) at 3,000 rpm. It is paired with a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission.
The 0-100 km/h acceleration time is a remarkable 3.0 seconds flat, 0.4 seconds faster than its predecessor. Ferrari's claim that "even as a Spider, its performance is on par with the coupe model" was already proven with the previous generation, and the arrival of the new model is set to further enhance the value of the Spider.
The world premiere is scheduled to take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Further details are expected to be revealed there.
