A Refreshed Take on Traditional Exterior Design!
Since its debut in 1948, the "Defender" has undergone changes to its name and drivetrain, but its fundamental structure has remained largely the same. While not currently sold in Japan, it continues to be produced in its home country with various configurations, including pickup, station wagon, and double cab.
The concept model "Land Rover DC100," said to represent the next generation of the Defender, is set to be unveiled at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
Regarding the DC100, Land Rover states it "shows the future direction of the iconic Defender" and "illustrates Land Rover's vision for future performance and utility." As a glance at the photos reveals, the sharp, angular design, reminiscent of the Jeep and Mercedes-Benz G-Class, has been updated to a slightly more rounded form, bringing it closer to the Discovery.
Production Scheduled to Begin in 2015
Gerry McGovern, Design Director for Land Rover and Range Rover, commented, "Creating a successor to the Defender, an icon with an established position, may be the most challenging task. While the DC100 is not a production model, the next generation is slated for production to commence in 2015. The DC100 holds significant meaning as the beginning of a journey to design a 21st-century Defender over the next four years."
Furthermore, John Edwards, Global Brand Director for Land Rover, stated, "The new model of the Defender, loved worldwide, aims to correctly inherit its heritage while responding to the demands of emerging global markets, incorporating feedback not only from current owners but also from future customers. The journey we embark on over the next four years will undoubtedly be exciting."
The world premiere of the DC100 will take place at the press conference of the Frankfurt Motor Show, which begins on September 13th. The proceedings of this press conference will be broadcast live viawww.landrover.com.
