Increased Size Enhances Interior Space

The newly announced GLC Class follows a revised naming convention where "GL" signifies an SUV model and "C" indicates it belongs to the C-Class range. In essence, while the name has changed, this marks the second generation of the GLK Class, which debuted in 2008 based on the C-Class platform.

The body dimensions have increased, measuring 4,656mm in length, 1,890mm in width, and 1,639mm in height – making it 120mm longer, 50mm wider, and 9mm taller. The increase in overall length is particularly notable, attributed to a wheelbase of 2,873mm, an increase of 118mm over the previous generation.

The increased dimensions translate directly into more interior space. For instance, the width at elbow level for the front seats has increased by 57mm to 1,449mm, and the rear legroom has grown by 57mm to 948mm. Luggage capacity has also been enhanced; with the 40:20:40 split rear seats in their upright position, the capacity is 580 liters, expanding to a maximum of 1,600 liters when folded. Long items up to 1,320mm can be accommodated, and the width has increased by 150mm to allow for items up to 1,100mm.

Despite the larger body and increased digital features like infotainment, the new model is 80kg lighter than its predecessor. Of this weight reduction, 50kg comes from the new body construction, which combines aluminum, high-strength steel, and ultra-high-strength steel. The drivetrain, featuring a 9G-TRONIC transmission with a magnesium housing and a compact transfer case, is also 12kg lighter.

Plug-in Hybrid Model Available

The engine lineup includes two diesel variants: the "GLC 220 d 4MATIC" with a maximum output of 125 kW (170 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, and the "GLC 250 d 4MATIC" with 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. The gasoline engine is the "GLC 250 4MATIC," producing 150 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm of torque. All these models are paired with the 9-speed automatic transmission, 9G-TRONIC.

Additionally, the lineup features the first plug-in hybrid model, the "GLC 350 e 4MATIC," which boasts a combined system output of 235 kW (320 hp). With a top speed of 235 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds, it emits only 60 g/km of CO2. On a full charge, it can travel up to 34 km on electric power alone. This model exclusively uses the "7G-TRONIC PLUS" 7-speed automatic transmission, optimized for hybrid applications.

All models feature permanent all-wheel drive, 4MATIC, with a torque distribution of 45 percent to the front wheels and 55 percent to the rear.

In addition to the standard model, there are two distinct lines: the EXCLUSIVE Line, featuring chrome accents throughout the exterior, and the AMG Line, which includes 19-inch wheels, AMG bumpers, and a radiator grille with twin chrome louvers.

Diverse Driving Modes

The suspension as standard features steel springs and a variable damping system called "Agility Control." Optionally, a fully supportive multi-chamber air suspension system, "AIR BODY CONTROL," is available.

For driving functions, the new GLC is equipped as standard with "DYNAMIC SELECT," allowing the driver to choose between five modes: ECO, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. With the optional Off-Road Engineering Package, additional modes are available for slippery surfaces ("Slippery"), optimal performance on sand and gravel ("Off-road"), and steep inclines ("Incline"). Furthermore, vehicles equipped with AIR BODY CONTROL gain "Rocking Assist" for overcoming stuck situations and a "Trailer" mode optimized for towing off-road.

The safety systems inherit the "Intelligent Drive" philosophy found in the C-Class, E-Class, and S-Class, which comprehensively analyzes and interprets information gathered from various sensors and cameras. Specifically, the CPA Plus emergency braking function, Crosswind Assist, and Headlamp Assist are standard. Additionally, a wide array of optional electronic safety features are available, including Active Lane Keeping Assist, Cross Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE Brake, and DISTRONIC PLUS.

In Germany, deliveries of the new GLC are scheduled to begin in September. Prices, including 19% VAT, are set at €44,863 (approximately ¥6.28 million) for the "GLC 220 d 4MATIC," €46,410 (approximately ¥6.50 million) for the "GLC 250 d 4MATIC," and €44,506 (approximately ¥6.23 million) for the "GLC 250 4MATIC" (calculated at an exchange rate of 1 Euro = 140 Yen). At launch, a special "Edition 1" package will also be available, similar to other models.
