The Modern Shooting Brake Hunts in the City

“A-ClassAs the fifth model in the family, the "CLA Shooting Brake" has made its debut in Japan today. As its name suggests, it is a model based on the four-door coupe model, the "CLA", with an expanded luggage space comparable to a station wagon for enhanced practicality.

One of the themes for this car is "urban hunting." Mercedes-Benz has reinterpreted the original meaning of a shooting brake as a "carriage for hunting" into a "car for hunting in the city." In other words, it's a vehicle for those who pursue an active, high-quality urban lifestyle in various scenes. This is the message conveyed.

As the "A" at the end of the car's name suggests, this model, like other A-Class family members, uses Mercedes' unique FF platform. While maintaining the stylish and flowing exterior design inherited from the CLA, the roofline and three character lines along the side have been extended to the rear, increasing rear headroom by 42mm compared to the CLA. The luggage compartment offers 495 liters in normal configuration, expanding to a maximum of 1,354 liters with the rear seats folded down, rivaling the 470-1,490 liters of the new "C-Class Station Wagon".

Furthermore, the body size is compact, measuring 4,640mm in length, 1,780mm in width, and 1,435mm in height for the base grade "CLA 180 Shooting Brake." The minimum turning radius is a class-leading 5.1 meters, making it well-suited for Japanese road conditions. Mercedes-Benz Japan is confident that it can fully meet the demand from owners of the previous generation C-Class (W204) looking to switch.

Available in Five Grades

The lineup available in Japan includes the "CLA 180 Shooting Brake" and "CLA 180 Shooting Brake Sport" equipped with a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine, and the "CLA 250 Shooting Brake" with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine. Additionally, there is the "CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC Shooting Brake," developed from the initial stages by Mercedes-AMG.

This model features not only the variable torque distribution 4WD system "4MATIC" but also a front axle and suspension uniquely developed by Mercedes-AMG engineers. Red accents are also applied to various parts, including the front and rear bumper lines, brake calipers, and interior stitching.

All models are equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (7G-DCT). Safety features include "CPA Plus," which effectively helps avoid or mitigate rear-end collisions with automatic emergency braking, and "ATTENTION ASSIST," which detects driver fatigue or drowsiness through over 70 parameters during long drives and alerts the driver. The "Active Parking Assist," which assists with both parallel and perpendicular parking through automatic steering, is also available as an option.

Prices are ¥3,600,000 for the "CLA 180 Shooting Brake," ¥4,280,000 for the "CLA 180 Shooting Brake Sport," ¥4,920,000 for the "CLA 250 Shooting Brake," and ¥5,450,000 for the "CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC Shooting Brake." Sales will begin in late June.

The Sole Mercedes-AMG Model of the CLA Shooting Brake

To commemorate the debut of the CLA Shooting Brake, the special edition "CLA Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" was also unveiled. This limited model consists of two variants: the "CLA 250 Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" and the "Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition."

The "CLA 250 Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" is based on the CLA 250 Shooting Brake. Its highlight is undoubtedly the striking 18-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels with orange accents on the flange. Available in two body colors, Mountain Grey (limited to 120 units) and Cosmos Black (limited to 80 units), it features orange accents not only on the wheels but also on the front and rear bumpers, bi-xenon headlight rings, interior stitching, and stripes on the seats and seatbelts.

Meanwhile, the "Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" is the sole Mercedes-AMG model in the CLA Shooting Brake lineup. Its 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine produces a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and a peak torque of 450 Nm, combined with AMG's proprietary "AMG 4MATIC" all-wheel-drive system.

Similar to the "CLA 250 Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition," the exterior features orange accents on the wheels, door mirrors, and rear skirt. A distinctive feature is the special decal on the body sides. The body colors available are Calcite White and Cosmos Black.

Inside, the car is equipped with bucket-type AMG performance seats and an AMG performance steering wheel made of DINAMICA material for excellent grip, creating a thoroughly sporty atmosphere.

Both special edition models come standard with the advanced driver assistance system "PRE-SAFE®" package, which includes "DISTRONIC PLUS" for maintaining appropriate following distance and "BLIND SPOT ASSIST" for warning of blind spot dangers. These features are usually optional.

The "CLA 250 Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" is priced at ¥5,670,000, and the "Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake OrangeArt Edition" is ¥8,620,000. Sales for both are also scheduled to begin in late June.
