Returning to Japan After Three Years

Toyota's flagship model in Europe, the Avensis, which previously garnered popularity in Japan, is set to make its return to the Japanese market after approximately three years.

The first generation of the Avensis was born in 1997. Its driving performance, powerful design, and high level of quietness gained popularity, and currently, the third generation is sold in Europe. In Japan, the second-generation sedan and station wagon were sold from 2003 to 2008. Their European-honed driving dynamics and simple, robust styling captured attention.

In response to customer demand for European-style vehicles, the station wagon will be produced at the UK plant where the Avensis is manufactured, for a four-month period from July to October, and then imported back to Japan.

The Avensis's most distinctive feature is its driving performance. It is equipped with a 2-liter 3ZR-FAE Valvematic engine, delivering a maximum output of 112kW (152ps) at 6,200rpm and a maximum torque of 196Nm (20.0kgm) at 4,000rpm. This engine achieves low fuel consumption by optimizing intake and exhaust, recording 13.6km/ℓ. Paired with the "Super CVT-i" transmission, it offers responsive performance from low to high speeds. Furthermore, the suspension is said to be tuned to withstand European cobblestones, autobahns, and winding roads.

Robust Interior and Exterior Design

The exterior inherits the flowing and dynamic one-motion form from the previous generation. Utilizing its 1,810mm width, it creates a stable stance that suggests dynamic driving while maintaining an elegant impression.

The interior expresses a sense of luxury through its solid, well-defined forms. Premium quality is further enhanced by the use of fine leather for the steering wheel and shift knob. The cabin offers a spacious interior where five adults can sit comfortably. With a luggage capacity of 543 liters, it provides ample cargo space.

The grade being introduced to Japan is the mid-range Xi trim, available in three colors: Black Mica, Silver Metallic, and Super White. The price is set at 2.5 million yen.

In Japan, the station wagon market is shrinking, and the number of wagon-type models from domestic manufacturers is declining. This is particularly true for wagons in the D-segment and above. The revival of the Avensis is likely to be welcome news for Japanese station wagon enthusiasts.
