While many manufacturers are actively adopting hybrid technology and downsizing these days, Mazda proposes a different approach to balance low fuel consumption with driving enjoyment.

The "SKYACTIV-G1.3" is a direct-injection 1.3-liter engine that achieves the world's highest compression ratio of 14.0, enabling low fuel consumption. The SKYACTIV-G1.3 delivers a maximum output of 62kW (84ps) at 5,400rpm and a maximum torque of 112Nm (11.4kgm) at 4,000rpm, while achieving a fuel economy of 30km/ℓ in the 10-15 mode test, a figure comparable to hybrid cars.

This engine has now been adopted for the compact hatchback "Demio," with the new "13-SKYACTIV" grade making its debut. Furthermore, the idling stop system "i-stop" is also equipped, contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

For driving feel, a cooperative control system for the engine and CVT manages torque, allowing drivers to reach their desired speed with minimal accelerator input. Additionally, features such as an engine under cover and a rear roof spoiler contribute to achieving a class-leading Cd value (coefficient of drag) of 0.29. This not only ensures stable handling but also plays a role in improving fuel economy.

In addition to the "SKYACTIV-G1.3," the Demio is also available with 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter DOHC engines. Both transmissions are offered with a choice of a 5-speed manual or a CVT.

Newly Adopts the Family Face with a 5-Point Grille at the Front

The exterior features a new sporty family face with a 5-point grille, recently adopted in models like the "Axela" and the minivan "Premacy." The 13-SKYACTIV is distinguished by design elements that express the SKYACTIV worldview of "transparency" and "purity," such as a blue metallic painted engine cover, headlamps with blue rings, and a dedicated rear badge. The 13-SKYACTIV is fitted with exclusive 14-inch aluminum wheels. The "SPORT" grade of the 1.5-liter model, meanwhile, uses newly designed 16-inch aluminum wheels.

Prices start from 1,149,000 yen, with the 13-SKYACTIV, the subject of this article, selling for 1,400,000 yen.
