A Gathering of Classic Bentley Models at the UK Headquarters

The Bentley Drivers Club (BDC) is the world's oldest automotive club, founded in the UK in 1936. It is the only automotive club officially recognized by Bentley, with over 4,000 members worldwide. The "Bentley Drivers Club Japan" is also active.

The event was organized to celebrate the BDC's 75th anniversary. It was planned as part of "Britain by Bentley," an initiative inspired by the British tradition of grand tours, aiming to traverse approximately 4,800 kilometers across the UK in various models born from Bentley's 80-year history.

One hundred members from around the world participated in the event, driving their cherished classic cars such as the "6 1/2 Litre Mulsanne" and the "Blower Bentley." After enjoying a gala dinner, they visited the Bentley headquarters the following day. There, they were given a tour of the manufacturing site where models like the "Mulsanne" and "Continental GT" are produced, an opportunity not often available.

Richard Charlesworth, Bentley's Director of VIP Relations, expressed his delight, stating, "When Bentley embarks on a grand tour of Britain, a visit to the Crewe headquarters is indispensable. It is extremely rare and a special occasion for such historically significant Bentleys to gather in Crewe." Jenny Ford of the BDC commented, "We are proud to have maintained the tradition of the BDC, founded 75 years ago by enthusiasts who enjoyed owner-driving, to this day."

BRAND HISTORY
"To build a car of the greatest speed and value in its class." These are the words of Walter Owen Bentley, the founder of BENTLEY MOTORS, affectionately known as "W.O."

W.O., who had gained experience as an engineer from a young age, initially worked not with automobiles but with steam locomotives. During his time off, he participated in motorcycle races, which turned his interest towards engines. After retiring, he began developing racing engines in earnest after World War I.

In the 1920s, he participated in races both in the UK and abroad. Notably, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the "Bentley Boys" achieved five victories between 1924 and 1930, establishing the marque's fame. However, the company faced financial difficulties and was acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1931, barely managing to retain its name.

Rolls-Royce's control continued for the next 67 years, but a turning point arrived in 1998. Volkswagen acquired the Bentley name and the Crewe factory in the UK. This allowed Bentley to forge its own path, separate from Rolls-Royce. With the introduction of new models, starting with the "Continental GT," followed by the "Continental Flying Spur" and "Continental GTC," Bentley made a remarkable comeback in the luxury car market. Furthermore, in 2003, they secured their sixth victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, their first in 73 years.
