A Lighter Body with a Sporty Design

Audi announced the fourth-generation A6 Sedan and its hybrid variant in December 2010. Now, the Avant version of the A6 has been revealed.

The body dimensions are 4,930mm in length, 1,870mm in width, and 1,460mm in height, representing a slight increase of 5mm in length and 15mm in width compared to the previous model. The front face, with its hexagonal single-frame grille and slightly upward-sweeping headlights, clearly signals its status as a new-generation Audi.

The new A6 Avant is designed under Audi's innovative lightweight concept, "multi material space frame," which actively utilizes aluminum. By incorporating aluminum in approximately 20 percent of the components, including the strut brace, engine compartment, and body structure, the vehicle's weight has been reduced by about 70kg compared to the previous model.

As expected of an Avant, the spaciousness of the luggage compartment is a key feature. It offers 565 liters of space, which can be expanded to 1,680 liters by folding down the rear seats. While the capacity in its standard configuration is similar to the previous model, the expanded capacity with the rear seats folded is 20 liters larger, suggesting its suitability for a wider range of uses.

18% Improved Fuel Efficiency Over Previous Model

The interior features Audi's traditional wrap-around design, creating a cockpit that envelops the driver. It exudes a clean aesthetic, blending simplicity with a high degree of craftsmanship. Optional features include seats with a massage function, a touch-screen navigation system (MMI) capable of Google searches and Bluetooth calls, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The powertrain lineup consists of six engines: two gasoline engines and four TDI units. Let's examine the gasoline engines that are likely to be introduced in Japan.

The 2.8 FSI is equipped with Audi's valvelift system, which adjusts valve lift in two stages to enhance torque and fuel efficiency. Its maximum output is 150kW (204hp). The higher-spec 3.0 TFSI engine delivers a maximum output of 220kW (300hp).
While further details for these two models have not been disclosed, thanks to features such as the engine start-stop system and energy regeneration mechanism, fuel efficiency has been improved by 18 percent compared to the previous models.

The transmission options vary depending on the engine, including a 6-speed manual, Audi's CVT (continuously variable transmission) Multitronic, and a 7-speed S tronic. The model equipped with the 3.0 TDI engine, boasting a maximum output of 230kW (313hp), will feature an 8-speed tiptronic. The entry-level model will be front-wheel drive, while the others will utilize the quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The Audi A6 Avant is scheduled to be displayed in showrooms across Europe around summer 2011, with a starting price announced at 40,850 euros (approximately 4.8 million yen).
