The new model announced this time is a plug-in hybrid based on the long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series Sedan. Given the popularity of the 5 Series in China, an expansion of market share is anticipated. Mass production of the vehicle in China is scheduled to begin in 2013. The BMW Group and its joint venture partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd., position this car as the next step in automotive development for the Chinese market.

The combination of a 160 kW engine equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, designed for parallel hybrid systems, and a 70 kW electric motor delivers BMW's signature driving dynamics and pioneering efficiency. It is also capable of zero-emission driving solely on electric power, with a range of up to 75 km at a constant speed of 60 km/h. By balancing driving performance with environmental friendliness, the vehicle is designed to meet the demands of the premium segment in the Chinese market.

Furthermore, the components for the plug-in hybrid drive system, power electronics, and high-voltage battery, located in the luggage compartment, were developed through close collaboration between the joint venture partners, the BMW Group and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. By actively leveraging the BMW Group's expertise in drive systems and the know-how accumulated in China regarding electric vehicles, they have succeeded in incorporating the latest technologies and academic knowledge concerning the applicability of new energy in automobiles. Future developments are eagerly awaited.
