2,300 Vehicles Damaged by Tsunami
In response to the earthquake, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. disclosed that its Iwaki Plant in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, the Tochigi Plant in Kaminokawa Town, Tochigi Prefecture, the Yokohama Plant in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Oppama Plant in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Zama Business Site in Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the Honmoku Dedicated Pier in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, sustained damage including partial building collapse and equipment damage. Additionally, approximately 1,300 vehicles intended for export to the United States at Hitachi Port in Ibaraki Prefecture, and about 1,000 new vehicles stored at the Miyagi Service Center in Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture, were damaged by the tsunami.
Furthermore, at Nissan Shatai and Nissan Kohki, which produce vehicles and powertrains and are located in the Kanto region, some buildings and equipment have been damaged. However, there have been no employee casualties at any of the affiliated companies.
Regarding dealerships, stores in Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, particularly close to the epicenter, suffered severe damage, and the whereabouts of some dealership employees remain unconfirmed. In the Kanto region, while some dealerships have reported damage, no employee casualties have occurred.
Donation of 30 Million Yen to NGO Japan Platform
Consequently, on the 14th, all production plants (Oppama, Yokohama, Tochigi, Iwaki, and Kyushu in Kanda Town, Fukuoka Prefecture) ceased operations. Employees were generally required to report to work at the Global Headquarters (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), Nissan Technical Center (Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture), and Nissan Advanced Technology Development Center (same city).
Regarding production prospects from the 15th onwards, in order to maximally comply with the government's request to prioritize the maintenance and securing of lifelines, particularly electricity, the Nissan Group will implement aggressive power-saving measures, which will restrict activities. Specifically, the Tochigi and Iwaki plants will halt production until the 18th, and the Oppama, Kyushu, Nissan Shatai, and Yokohama plants will suspend production until the 16th.
For initial support to the affected regions, Nissan has already donated 30 million yen to the NGO Japan Platform and is considering additional support based on the evolving situation. Specific measures under consideration include the free loan of relief vehicles (trucks and forklifts), provision of daily necessities and medical supplies (blankets, disinfectants, masks), employee fundraising activities with a company match, and the promotion/support of blood donation drives.
Additionally, air conditioning will be turned off at the Global Headquarters and NTC. All domestic galleries (Global Headquarters, Sapporo, Ginza, Nagoya, Fukuoka) will be temporarily closed (until March 18th, for the time being), and all domestic dealership stores will turn off their signage lights and reduce showroom lighting intensity.
