A Rich Engine Lineup and a Powerful Stance
The C-Class is positioned as Mercedes' most important model. When it debuted as the "190E" in 1982, its annual production was around 85,000 units worldwide. The current model, however, has established a significant market, surpassing 1 million units in cumulative global sales since its introduction in March 2007.
The C-Class, with its revised interior and exterior and over 2,000 improved parts, will have its 2012 model unveiled at the Detroit Show. It will go on sale in the European market from January and in the US from summer.
The biggest change this time is to the engines; all engines now feature "BlueEfficiency" specifications. Combined with transmission improvements and the addition of an idling stop function, fuel economy has been improved by up to 31 percent. For the European market, a model equipped with a 2.2-liter CDI will also be added to the lineup.
A highlight of the engine lineup is the C350 Sport Sedan, powered by a V6 gasoline engine with the highly efficient "BlueDirect" process. While fuel economy is improved by 5 percent compared to the previous C350 model, it also boasts high performance, with a maximum output of 302 hp (225 kW) and a maximum torque of 370 Nm in the US specification, making it a powerful engine.
The 4-cylinder 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo produces a maximum output of 204 hp (150 kW) and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The sedan model accelerates from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds with a fuel economy of 24 mpg (10.2 L/100km).
Design changes include a revised front headlamp design with an upward-swept look, emphasizing a powerful presence, similar to the design found in the new CLS. The bumper has also been redesigned, and aluminum is used for the hood to contribute to weight reduction. The taillights also feature LEDs.
The interior features a redesigned dashboard, instrument cluster, and steering wheel, incorporating elements from the E-Class.
In terms of safety, drive support systems inherited from the E-Class, such as ATTENTION ASSIST, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Parking Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Assist, are available as options.
