A Groundbreaking Price Point Under $30,000

The CT200h, Lexus's fifth hybrid model, is set to arrive at American dealerships in early March 2011. Its price, excluding delivery costs, has been announced at $29,120 (approximately ¥2.45 million), falling below the $30,000 mark.

This model, which will bear the most accessible price tag in the Lexus lineup, is powered by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine producing a maximum output of 73kW (99 ps) and an electric motor generating 60kW (82 ps), for a combined system output of 100kW (136 ps). It also boasts impressive acceleration, achieving 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

Fuel economy is projected to be 43 mpg in the city (approximately 18.28 km/ℓ) and 40 mpg on the highway (approximately 17 km/ℓ), with the capability for zero-emission driving. However, the specific range achievable in EV mode has not yet been disclosed. The vehicle offers four selectable driving modes: Normal, EV, Sport, and Eco.

The Sport mode, in particular, appears to offer a distinct driving experience. It enhances agility by adjusting the throttle and electric power steering settings, and reduces the intervention of the VSC and traction control systems. Furthermore, the instrument panel color changes from the usual blue to red, and the hybrid power indicator is replaced by a tachometer.

The interior features sporty touches designed to engage the driver, including a wide-grip steering wheel, adjusted pedal angles, a low seating position, 10-way power seats, and lumbar support. To provide a more linear steering feel and enhance driving comfort, the CT200h is equipped with Yamaha's Performance Damper system at both the front and rear, which absorbs and minimizes undesirable body vibrations.

Considering that features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, 17-inch alloy wheels, and an 8-airbag system are standard, the sub-$30,000 price point can indeed be considered groundbreaking.
