The Audi Q2 Receives an Update, Evolving Both Inside and Out
On September 2, Audi AG announced that the Q2 compact SUV has undergone a model change.
Exterior Evolves Significantly with Polygonal Motifs Adopted for the Rear End
This model change sees the adoption of numerous polygonal motifs in the exterior design. Firstly, the polygonal motif, which characterizes the front and shoulder lines, has been applied to the rear end. The bumper integrates a diffuser insert with a large pentagonal shape.
The front design has also been modified, with the octagonal Singleframe lowered to emphasize the width of the front section. The insert also features a polygonal motif, and for the advanced and S line trims, a narrow slit has been added between the radiator grille and the hood, reminiscent of Audi's iconic model, the Audi Sport quattro.
LED headlights are standard, with matrix LED headlights available as an option. Seven LEDs within the module generate intelligently controlled high beams, while ten LEDs behind a diamond-shaped optical element function as daytime running lights, and a further seven LEDs serve as dynamic indicators.
In addition to Apple Green, a new color for Audi, five new shades have been added: Manhattan Gray, Navarra Blue, Arrow Gray, and Turbo Blue.
Inside, controls for various functions are operated via a rotary push-button (MMI touch) on the center console or through a voice control system that understands natural language. The Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, with its 705 watts driving 14 speakers, is a luxurious feature unparalleled in the compact SUV segment.
The MMI navigation plus includes an LTE module for high-speed data transfer and a Wi-Fi hotspot function to connect passengers' mobile devices. It also offers Audi connect services, including online traffic information. Furthermore, the "Audi connect emergency call & service" and "Audi connect remote & control" services have been newly added. These allow users to remotely lock the vehicle, check fuel levels, and confirm the remaining driving range.
Equipped with Driver Assistance Systems Comparable to Higher Segments
The powertrain lineup includes three TFSI and two TDI engines. The 1.5 TFSI generates a maximum output of 110 kW (150 PS) and a peak torque of 250 Nm. Paired with a 7-speed S tronic transmission, its fuel consumption in the NEDC cycle is a mere 5.4–5.1 L/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 124–116 g/km. Under low load and low revs, the Cylinder on Demand (COD) efficiency system temporarily deactivates cylinders 2 and 3.
Additional TDI and TFSI engines are scheduled for release by the end of the year, all meeting the new Euro 6 AP emissions standard. The diesel engines utilize twin-dosing technology to minimize NOx emissions. This system employs two SCR catalytic converters working in tandem: one positioned directly behind the engine and another under the vehicle's floor, each covering different operating conditions to complement each other's function.
For the suspension, sport suspension that lowers the vehicle height by 10 mm is available as an option, and suspension with damper control can also be equipped. This system includes the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, which can be ordered as an individual option. With a ground clearance of approximately 150 mm, the Audi Q2 is also suitable for driving on maintained off-road surfaces, and an off-road mode has been added to the ESC stabilization control.
The driver assistance systems are comparable to those found in higher-segment vehicles. The standard Audi pre sense front system monitors the area ahead of the vehicle using radar to avoid accidents or mitigate their severity. Lane departure warning is also standard.
Optional systems are categorized into "Drive," "Safety," and "Park" packages. The "Park" package includes a reversing camera and Parking system plus. As an upgrade option, a park assist system that automatically maneuvers the vehicle into and out of parking spaces is also available.
The "Safety" package includes side assist, rear cross-traffic assist, Audi pre sense basic, and Audi pre sense rear. The "Drive" package includes the new high-end system, adaptive cruise assist, available in combination with MMI navigation plus, along with the Audi virtual cockpit and S tronic.
With the adaptive cruise assist function, the system can take over key driving operations such as acceleration, deceleration, and steering within the same lane in many situations. Capacitive touch sensors are integrated into the steering wheel to detect whether the driver is holding it. The adaptive cruise assist operates across all speed ranges. When combined with camera-based road sign recognition, it can recognize speed limit signs and automatically decelerate the vehicle, accelerating again when the speed limit is no longer in effect.
The new Q2 is scheduled to be introduced in the Japanese market in the first half of 2021, with pricing yet to be determined.
