RX Gains Downsized Turbocharged Engine Model

At the Shanghai Motor Show, which commenced today in China, Lexus introduced the "RX200t" as a new entry-grade model for its latest crossover, theRXRX.

The new RX, which had its world premiere at the New York Auto Show earlier this month, was initially offered with two powertrains: the "RX450h" featuring a 3.5-liter V6 hybrid system, and the "RX350" with a 3.5-liter V6 engine. In Shanghai, the "RX200t," the first turbocharged model for the RX, was added to the lineup.

Positioned as an entry-level model for the RX, it replaces the "RX270," which was previously equipped with a 2.7-liter inline-4 engine.

The engine adopted for the RX200t is the same unit that debuted in its smaller sibling, theNXNX": a 2.0-liter inline-4 DOHC direct-injection turbo with an intercooler. Combined with a twin-scroll turbocharger and the "Dual VVT-iW" variable valve timing and lift system with an expanded range of lift angles, it produces a maximum output of 170 kW (238 ps). A 6-speed automatic transmission is employed.

Furthermore, the RX200t is equipped with the "Lexus Safety System +" pre-collision safety package, pursuing high safety performance. Sales in Japan are scheduled for autumn 2015 or later. Pricing has not yet been determined.
