Peak Output: 367ps, Up 27ps from Previous Model
Audi has unveiled theA3series' most powerful version, the RS 3 Sportback, for the first time at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.
Development was handled by Audi's subsidiary, quattro GmbH, now a familiar name, just like with other RS series models such as theRS 7andRS Q3. "RS" signifies Audi's high-performance models, on par with BMW's "M" and Mercedes-Benz's "AMG".
The power unit for the RS 3 Sportback, like its predecessor, is a turbocharged inline-five-cylinder engine, neither an inline-four nor a V6. This engine inherits Audi's traditional technology, also featured in the "Audi quattro" that dominated motorsports in the 1980s. It was recently adopted in the hot version of the previous "TT", the "TT RS".
Peak output is 367ps (270kW), an increase of 27ps over the previous model, while maximum torque is 465Nm (47.4kgm), up 15Nm, available across a wide range from a low 1,625rpm to 5,400rpm. This enables a blistering 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.3 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model. Top speed reaches 280km/h with the limiter removed.
While it's a traditional inline-five-cylinder turbo, it goes without saying that it incorporates Audi's latest TFSI technology, achieving high power and efficiency through the combination of gasoline direct injection and a turbocharger. Fuel consumption is 8.1 liters/100km (approximately 12.3km/liter) in the European NEDC cycle, with CO2 emissions at 189 g/km, meeting the European "Euro 6" emissions standard. This is a commendable achievement for this class of vehicle.
The transmission is a 7-speed S tronic (dual-clutch), and the power generated by the inline-five-cylinder turbo engine is transmitted to the front and rear wheels via the "quattro" all-wheel-drive system. The power distribution ratio between the front and rear axles varies depending on the situation, with up to 100 percent of the total output being sent to the rear wheels. Equipped with electronic torque vectoring, Audi states that the car offers even greater driftability than its predecessor.

European Deliveries Begin This Summer
The RS 3 Sportback's ride height is lowered by 25mm compared to the base A3 Sportback, and RS-specific sports suspension is standard.
Of course, an optional adaptive damping system, "Audi magnetic ride," is available for drivers who want to enjoy both sporty driving and city use, allowing them to adjust suspension characteristics to their preference. The car can be driven in four modes – "COMFORT," "AUTO," "DYNAMIC," and "INDIVIDUAL" – which comprehensively link the characteristics of the steering, engine, and transmission.
The standard tires are 19-inch with a 235/35 size on both front and rear. Optional 19-inch alloy wheels in matte titanium or high-gloss black are available, with front tires sized 255/30 and rear 235/35. Another notable optional feature is the first-ever carbon-ceramic brakes (front only) for the A3 series.
While the RS 3 Sportback is only available as a five-door model, it incorporates the "MQB platform" widely used across the Volkswagen Group, notably in thenew "Golf". Furthermore, the extensive use of aluminum in the hood and other areas contributes to a vehicle weight of 1,520kg, a reduction of 55kg compared to the previous model.
Looking at the exterior, there are many differences from the base model, such as large air inlets and flared front fenders. The signature Audi singleframe grille is finished in matte black with a honeycomb design that enhances its sporty appearance. Two badges, "RS 3" and "quattro," strongly assert the car's identity. At the rear, a roof spoiler is fitted, with a large diffuser beneath it. On either side, dual tailpipes in matte aluminum peek out.
The interior is predominantly black, featuring RS-exclusive multifunction sport steering wheel and sport seats as standard. The sporty trim uses a combination of leather and Alcantara. For an additional cost, RS bucket seats made of carbon fiber are also available.
The RS 3 Sportback is priced at 52,700 Euros and will begin deliveries in Europe this summer. Introduction to Japan is currently undecided.
