Performance Exceeds the 458 Speciale
Today, February 3rd, Ferrari held the world premiere of the "488 GTB," the next-generation V8 Berlinetta succeeding the458 Italia"458 Italia." As many had anticipated, the engine is no longer naturally aspirated but has adopted turbocharging, similar to the earlier "California T" model.
While the displacement of the new unit has been reduced from the previous 458 Italia's 4,499cc to 3,902cc, there is absolutely no compromise in performance. The power output is rated at a maximum of 492kW (670ps) at 8,000rpm, with a peak torque of 760Nm at 3,000rpm, representing a significant upgrade of +67kW (100ps) and +220Nm respectively.
The transmission is a 7-speed F1-DCT (dual-clutch transmission) equipped with a variable torque control system. According to the released statement, the 0-100km/h acceleration time is 3.0 seconds, a 0.4-second improvement over the predecessor. This matches the time set by the "458 Speciale", the hardcore variant announced in the summer of 2013, and the 0-200km/h time is an even more impressive 8.3 seconds, 0.8 seconds faster.
The top speed is stated to be over 330km/h, and the lap time at Fiorano, Ferrari's benchmark for machine potential, is 1 minute 23 seconds flat, also 0.5 seconds faster than the 458 Speciale.
The exterior design, handled by the Ferrari Styling Centre, features distinctive large air intakes with styling cues inspired by the original "308 GTB." Aerodynamically, Ferrari claims a 50 percent increase in downforce compared to the predecessor.
We will continue to report on further details of the 488 GTB in future articles. Its official public debut is scheduled for the Geneva Motor Show this spring in March, where its full specifications will be revealed.
